THE FONDATION DU CHUM’S NEWSLETTER May 2016 Envoi de poste-publication, numéro de convention : 40051592 Volume 9, number 1 SPECIAL REPORT: CANCER Expertise that makes the CHUM shine UNITED FRONT AGAINST THE CHUM PROVIDES THE MOST CANCER DIAGNOSTICS, Luce Moreau, CFRE President and Chief Executive Officer THE FONDATION’S EQUINOX BREAKING NEWS! Cancer Breakthrough For the well-being of its cancer patients, the Consortium de recherche en oncologie-clinique du Québec, which includes the CHUM, and Esperas Pharma announced in April that they will be testing a new treatment over the next 3.5 years. They have teamed up to develop an all-new oral drug for patients with advanced or metastatic cancer, including triple negative breast, colorectal and ovarian cancers. Winter is over and spring has finally sprung. This is a very busy time for the Fondation, which is hard at work with renewed vigour as our combined efforts are about to bear fruit with the new CHUM’s opening. These efforts are “combined,” since they have been supported by major partners from the very start. The latest organization to join the Giving Ourselves the Best in Health Care Campaign is Desjardins Group, which donated $2.25M that will certainly benefit the new CHUM’s patients. Desjardins’ confidence, like yours, is crucial in enabling the new CHUM to get through the next few months before it begins accepting patients. The new CHUM will be a source of pride to everyone and it is thanks to donors like you that we can be sure to give patients the best in health Left to right: Gaétan Morin, President and CEO, Fonds de solidarité FTQ; Luc Marengère, Managing Partner, TVM Capital; the Honourable Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal; Caroline Fortier, CEO, Esperas Pharma Inc.; Dr. Gerald Batist, Scientific Director, Q-CROC; Vincent Poitout, Director of Research, CHUM and Director, CRCHUM THE CHUM ENJOYS AN OUTSTANDING REPUTATION FOR ITS WORK IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS BREAST CANCER This is the most common cancer in women, striking one of every eight at some point in their lives. care. ANDRÉ ROBIDOUX Medical Director and Principal Investigator, Breast Cancer Research Group The CHUM has broad experience treating breast cancer and is home to a large medical research group in this field. Recognized internationally, he’s leading one of the largest research groups in this type of cancer in Canada. At the present time, some 1,000 patients in this group are being monitored, with hopes of reducing Québec breast cancer mortality rates. CREATION OF THE CICC The CHUM Integrated Cancer Centre (CICC), established in 2012, is in charge of all the CHUM’s oncological work. The Direction générale de cancérologie of the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) has accredited the CICC as a supra-regional specialized centre for the treatment of complex cancers. DR. DANIELLE CHARPENTIER, Medical co-manager, CICC T CANCER TREATMENTS AND FOLLOW-UPS IN QUÉBEC. PROSTATE CANCER COLORECTAL CANCER There are some 25,000 new cases and about 4,000 deaths from this disease in Canada each year, including some 1,000 deaths in Québec. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer among men and the third among women in Canada. DR. CAROLE RICHARD DR. FRED SAAD Chief and Director, Interdisciplinary Urologic Oncology Group The CHUM has been a leader, over the past six years, in developing virtually every new chemotherapy agent serving to boost life expectancy and quality among prostate cancer patients. Its most recent development is Radium 223, a drug used in intravenous radiotherapy for metastases. The CHUM is currently the only hospital centre in Québec to offer this treatment. The CHUM handles most of the province’s advanced cancer cases, making it Québec’s biggest prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment centre. Chief of Digestive Surgery The CHUM is a Québec reference centre for complex rectal cancers and inflammatory diseases. It is one of the only hospitals to have deployed chromoendoscopy, a state-of-the-art technique for detecting intestinal polyps by applying blue strain to the intestinal walls. The team’s enterostomal therapists have developed unmatched expertise using this technology in Québec. Two of the unit’s gastroenterologists hold sub-specialties in nutritional diseases. ISABELLE LANGLOIS Diagnosed with colorectal cancer THYROID CANCER Papillary thyroid carcinoma is primarily found among 30 to 40 year olds, affecting more women than men. DR. ANDRÉE BOUCHER Endocrinologist “Each donation to the Fondation du CHUM enables people like me to continue living not only their life but their dreams. To have ambitions and undertake new projects. That’s also the goal of a foundation.” JULIE HENRICHON The MSSS has designated the interprofessional thyroid cancer unit as a supra-regional centre because of its expertise in this medical field. The unit—the only thyroid cancer team to receive this designation—comprises more than 13 specialities working together to determine each patient’s best treatment options. Furthermore, the team includes in its continuous improvement committee two representatives of patients with thyroid cancer and develops, in partnership with them, projects that meet their specifical needs. Diagnosed with breast cancer “I want to thank the donors as well as the doctors. Your gifts help finance the training of new physicians and buy the state-ofthe-art equipment required for constantly improving care. I am deeply grateful for all they did for me. My battle with cancer taught me the importance of thinking about yourself and living in the present. I am now participating in a CHUM research program that I think will allow huge advances in cancer care and help others going through the same ordeal.” JOHANNE RACINE Diagnosed with endometrial cancer 12,000 patients per year 400 healthcare practitioners 19 interdisciplinary teams “The CHUM’s medical team has given me a longer life and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Thanks also, to the donors who helped buy the da Vinci SI Surgical System. I lack the words to express my profound gratitude. You chose the path back to health and I was able to leave the hospital in good shape—and not hobbled over—just a few hours after the operation, on both my feet.” You or a loved one have been treated at the CHUM and you would like to share your story? Email us at [email protected] THE NEW CHUM ONCOLOGY REFERENCE The new CHUM is taking form right now before our eyes. This state-of-the-art hospital centre provides a special facility for cancer patients: the CHUM Integrated Cancer Centre (CICC). All oncological specialties and professions will be grouped in a leading-edge, welcoming and gleaming new centre, with an entrance and hallways reserved for its patients. INNOVATIVE TREATMENT AT THE PATIENT’S BEDSIDE Multiple top-line linear accelerator facilities are available for the new CHUM’s cancer patients. This means faster access to radiotherapy accurately dosed in real time according to the tumour’s state. This new equipment also means x rays and radiotherapy treatment can be performed simultaneously, saving time and reducing travel. source: Elekta Big changes in how health care is provided are also in store, with the advent of software that will simplify comprehensive patient management, from diagnosis through long-term treatment. The application will, for example, help teams set up the treatment plan, dictate clinical notes and obtain specific protocols. The comprehensive treatment program for a patient undergoing surgery, plus chemo and radiotherapy, will be coordinated through a fully integrated system. These new tools will provide additional support to the CHUM’s outstanding professionals who work each day helping patients who are dealing with the harsh reality of cancer. The Fondation du CHUM’s Clinics offer a wide range of services, including vaccination at the Clinique Santé-voyage. This was Québec’s first clinic to offer the new shingles vaccine. Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella virus. Most people with this disease are between 50 and 70 years old, but it can occur at any age if the immune system lets down its guard. Dr. Jean Vincelette, medical and scientific director of the Fondation’s Clinique Santé-voyage, says this shot is the best protection. “The vaccine we give our patients is safe and works well. Before 2009, there was no vaccination for shingles, which is often quite painful and may have complications. Now we can finally protect ourselves against this disease.” Wellness Expertise!
