WWW.OEAW.AC.AT JUNE 16, 2016 START: 17.00 INSTITUTE FOR SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY APOSTELGASSE 23, 1030 VIENNA BOOK PRESENTATION CHRISTOPH CARL FERNBERGER THE FIRST AUSTRIAN IN PATANI AND AYUDHYA HELMUT LUKAS Christoph Carl Fernberger (1598-1653), an aristocrat, was the first Austrian globetrotter. He was also the first Austrian to visit the Kingdom of Thailand (Ayudhya) and the Malay port-state of Patani in the early 17th century. At that time, Patani was ruled by a female monarch, the "Violet Queen" (Raja Ungu). In 1624 Fernberger arrived in Patani where he stayed for several months. When the army of Ayudhya invaded Patani, Fernberger acted as adviser to the queen, trained the Portuguese, Spaniards, and Dutchmen living in Patani in the use of weapons, and also participated in combat. Perhaps Fernberger's account is the only historical source on this war between Ayudhya and Patani, from which the latter emerged victorious. At this book presentation event, the editor and compiler, Dr. Helmut Lukas, will introduce the book and give an overview of Fernberger’s contribution to our understanding of this region and historical period. A reception with food and entertainment will follow.
