A Look at Vitamins & Dietary Supplements sub-category close-up Top 15 Flavors Worldwide As the colder seasons begin to creep in, some of us keep a more consistent regimen when it comes to vitamins and dietary supplements in hopes of fending of the cold and flu season. Here’s a look at the current flavor activity in this category. If you've taken in a restaurant or pub menu, set foot into a grocery or convenience store, turned on one of the many food-centric cable channels out there or walked into a coffee shop, then it's safe to say you've probably noticed the trend. Now, of course, a spike in pumpkin flavors is expected in the US this time of year but it's the quantity of new pumpkin flavored products hitting menus and the retail market that's newsworthy. According to restaurant market research firm, Technomic, there have been 79 limited-time pumpkin-themed menu items at the top 250 restaurant chains from August through October of 2012. To put that into perspective, that's over a 100% increase during the same time period in 2011 when there were 37 such menu items. There were 116 pumpkin flavored food and beverage products launched in America between August and October 2011, while during the same three months in 2012 there were 128 launches, accounting for a 10% increase. This doesn't come as a surprise to us as most food trends grow roots on the restaurant side and then as their branches grow, they reach and climb over into retail. Our guess is that the increase from the same time period in 2012 to 2013 will be higher than the 10% from 2011 to 2012. Pumpkin Pie Soda Maine Root Handcrafted Beverages From baked goods to coffee, pumpkin flavors have been fall favorites for quite some time, but to what can we attribute the sudden rise in popularity over the past couple of years? For many consumers pumpkin flavors provide a connection to the classic comfort food, pumpkin pie. Pair that with the soaring popularity of the all-things-indulgent trend and add to the mix the fact that companies are continually improving flavor delivery in food and drink and you have yourself the perfect combination for a consumer cult following.
