THE DRUG FILE: ADRENOCHROMES
Adrenochromes
Street Names
Pink Adrenaline
Description
Adrenochrome is a by product of oxidized adrenaline. Its chemical name is 3-hydroxy-1-methyl-5, 6-indoline
-dione. Adrenochrome can refer to two things: a metabolite of endogenous epinephrine or a product of metabolized pharmaceutical epinephrine. This drug is controversial because there are debates as to what class
this drug belongs to. Adrenochrome is believed to have psychoactive and hallucinogenic effects. This means
that it is believed to change the user's behaviour, perception, mood and consciousness and also cause the
person to hallucinate. It is believed that adrenochromes may produce effects similar to, but milder than LSD
and psilocybin.
Origin and Medical Usage
It is believed that during World War II, supplies of adrenaline ran short. In medical emergencies, patients
were given adrenaline from old stock that had been sitting around. This adrenaline had time to sit out and
react with the air, causing it to be oxidized and making it appear pink. This oxidized adrenaline was given to
patients and produced temporary hallucinations. Today, epinephrine is used in emergency treatment for allergic reactions such as:
Foods
Insect stings or bites
Drugs
Other allergies
Adrenaline also has a haemostatic effect which stops bleeding.
Short-term Effects
Short-term effects of the drug include:
Euphoria
Inability to concentrate
Lack of judgment
Change in thoughts
Poor insight
Long-term Effects
Further research is required.
Legal Status
Adrenochrome is not a controlled substance.
