CEPHALEXIN ORAL CAPSULES/CEFTRIAXONE INJECTION
(GENERIC FOR KEFLEX/ ROCEPHIN)
How to use the medication:
Cephalexin and ceftriaxone are cephalosporins which are antibiotics used to treat a wide variety of
infections. It is to be taken as prescribed by your clinician. Oral cephalexin should be taken twice a day
for 7 days. This medicine may be taken with food especially if stomach upset occurs. Stopping the
medicine too early may result in a return of the infection.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, take the
scheduled dose only. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.
The medication you received has been prescribed for your current infection only. Do not use this
medication for any other condition. You should finish the medication unless your clinician tells you to
stop.
Side Effects:
Oral cephalexin may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. If these
symptoms continue, call your clinician. Notify your clinician immediately if an allergic reaction occurs such
as difficulty breathing, rash, hives or itching. Some people who are allergic to penicillin cannot take
cephalosporins. Ceftriaxone injection has been known to cause seizures in patients with kidney
impairment.
Precautions:
Tell your clinician if you:
 Have any allergies to any other medicines, especially penicillins or cephalosporins
 Are pregnant or breastfeeding
 If you have any kidney disease
 Are taking any medication for gout or a diuretic such as Lasix, furosemide or metformin
Cephalexin and ceftriaxone may cause a false reading in tests for sugar in the urine. Your clinician may
suggest you use TesTape instead of Clinitest for sugar testing in the urine while using this drug.
Use of these medications may result in a yeast infection. Report any vaginal itching or discharge.

Discontinue medication and call clinic immediately if you develop shortness of breath, difficulty breathing,
rash or itching. If you are unable to breathe, dial 911.
