Silymarin
Capsules 140 mg.
Composition
Legalon 140 mg capsules: Each capsule contains 140 mg silymarin.
Indications
Toxic liver disease (environmental-, drug- and alcohol-induced), supportive treatment of chronic
inflammatory hepatic disease and liver cirrhosis.
Properties
Improve liver functions -protect against liver damage
Silymarin is the active principle of LEGALON, it is of plant origin. Its therapeutic activity is based
on three mechanisms:
- Silymarin alters the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes to prevent
penetration of liver toxin into the interior part of cell.
- Silymarin stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in an increase in ribosomal
protein synthesis and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of new
hepatocytes.
- Silymarin acts as antioxidant, it reacts with free radicals transforming them into more stable and
less reactive compounds.
These mechanisms make LEGALON very useful as hepatoprotective that promote faster
regeneration of diseased liver tissue, which then reflected in improvement in general condition of
patients.
