It’s time high schools get serious about deterring steroid use among their athletes. A few weeks ago, an Arizona high school suspended 10 of its football players after they admitted anabolic steroid use. The coach was quoted in the local paper acknowledging that steroid use is “a broad problem — not isolated to one particular area.” He’s right. Oct. 24 Insightful E-Mail! The U.S. Supreme Court decisions upholding the legality of high school drug testing in Vernonia School Dist. 47J v. Acton and in Pottawatomie County v. Earls provide a road map to the development of testing programs that will pass legal review. High school legal counsel can use these and other state and federal decisions to craft drug-testing policies all parties will support. So, what about the A.D.s’ number one concern — money? Steroid testing traditionally has been more expensive than street-drug testing. The huge volume of testing for illicit drugs keeps the cost for such tests low. Further, because no quick/easy screening methodology has been developed for anabolic-steroid testing, the analysis costs have been significant. Drug Free Sport has a solution for the high cost of anabolic-steroid testing. Please read Cindy Thomas’ article in this edition of Insight to learn about implementing a low-cost steroid testing program. It’s time to start testing for anabolic steroids, even if it causes a family feud. 1 Nandrolone – Dietary supplements containing norandrostenedione or norandrostenediol will cause a positive test for the metabolites of nandrolone. This includes Andro Stat Poppers, Deca Force and 19-Nor Andro Stack. 2 Stanozolol – Stanozolol is a veterinary steroid also known as Winstrol or Winny-V and is easily detected in sports drug testing. 5 4 Boldenone – Equi-Bolan and Boldione are two dietary supplements containing the precursor to boldenone. Both will lead to a positive drug test for boldenone and/or its metabolite(s). Boldenone is a veterinary horse steroid. 5 the top Anabolic Steroids Found Drug Testing Athletes 3 THAT’S SMART! UCLA Olympic Lab and Drug Free Sport Partner to Offer Steroid Testing to All Levels of Sport. The UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, the only laboratory in the United States accredited by the IOC for anabolicsteroid drug testing, has developed a high-quality, low-cost steroid test. The test will be marketed by The National Center for Drug Free Sport under its “SMART Drug-Testing“ program. “The Olympic laboratory at UCLA has once again taken the lead in the area of sports drug testing,” according to Frank Uryasz, president of The National Center for Drug Free Sport. “In the early 1980s, UCLA scientists provided the highest levels of sport with the tools necessary to reduce athletes’ steroid use. Now, they bring their steroid research and detection expertise to all levels of sport.” Although the SMART Anabolic Steroid Panel differs from the steroid tests the UCLA lab conducts for organizations such as the NFL, NCAA and the USOC, the test is about one-half the cost of traditional steroid tests. The low-cost steroid test targets the anabolic steroids abused most commonly in collegiate or high school athletics. These include the dietary-supplement and prohormone products that are appealing to young student-athletes because of their availability. Drug Free Sport will work closely with sports organizations that elect to begin steroid testing under this new program. With its well-trained and experienced staff, Drug Free Sport ensures that the organization has a credible, written drug-testing policy, which includes a description of the actions taken in the event of a positive drug test. It also provides administrative oversight of the specimen collection, transportation and results-reporting processes. Further, Drug Free Sport can collect the urine samples or will train institutional staff on proper collection procedures for sport drug testing. Sports or academic organizations interested in learning more about the SMART Anabolic Steroid Panel should contact Cindy Thomas (ext. 12) or Chris Guinty (ext. 21) at Drug Free Sport, 816/474-8655. Both will be happy to answer any questions about this new and valuable service. Testosterone – Dietary supplements with testosterone precursors, like Andro 100 and Anotesten, could elevate an athlete’s testosterone level enough to cause a positive drug test. Methandienone – Also known as Dianabol or D-bol, methandienone is a synthetic anabolic steroid, which athletes use orally. COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT: Steroid Definitions Anabolic steroids became illegal to use without a prescription, possess or sell as a result of the Anabolic Steroid Control Act (ASCA) in 1990. However, when Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act four years later, the law created a loophole in the ASCA allowing precursors of scheduled anabolic steroids to be sold as dietary supplements. Not only does this pose a health threat, but it also has caused drug-testing confusion among athletes. Those participating in athletic competition should know that while steroid precursors are legal, they are banned by many sports organizations. Use of these supplements can lead to a positive drug test with sanctions equaling those enforced for the use of the scheduled substances. Athletes need to remember that as far as sport is concerned, whether something is legal has nothing to do with whether it is banned. Contact the Resource Exchange Center at www.drugfreesport.com/rec.
