Basic information
Hydroxyzine HCl competitively blocks the effects of histamine that is responsible for itchiness,
increased permeability of vessels and attraction of inflammatory cells.
It is well absorbed following oral administration and is thought to be metabolised in the liver. In
dogs, hydroxyzine HCl may persist for 6-8 hours and up to 12 hours in cats.
Dogs and Cats
Hydroxyzine HCl is used as an antihistamine and anti-itch medication especially for dogs and cats
that has atopic dermatitis. It has been used as an antihistamine for flea allergy dermatitis in dogs
and cats as well.
Different animals respond differently to antihistamines. An antihistamine that is effective in one
dog or cat may have no effect on another. It is advisable to give a 10 day trial before trying a different antihistamine. Some atopic dogs will need adjunct corticosteroids to control their pruritus.
In cats, hydroxyzine HCl has been used to treat military dermatitis and a disease called eosinophilic granuloma complex.
Horses
Hydroxyzine HCl is used orally of intramuscularly to treat hives or allergic skin reactions in horses.
This is a regulated drug (Class 2 ARCI drug).
Birds
Hydroxyzine HCl has been used in itchy birds associated with allergies, self-mutilation or feather
picking.
How to give
Hydroxyzine HCl should be given exactly as your vet has prescribed. If you have accidentally
missed a dose, give the next dose when you remember. If it is close to the next dose, give it to
your pet at the scheduled time. Do NOT double dose as a means of catching up.
Wash your hands every time after giving this medication to your pet.
Side effects
In dogs and cats, hydroxyzine HCl can cause sedation. This is the most common side effect.
Less common side effects in dogs are increased excitability, fine rapid tremors, whole body tremors and seizures (rare). In cats, less common side effects are increased drinking, depression and
changes in their behavior.

Precautions
Hydroxyzine HCl is contraindicated in patients that are hypersensitive to it.
Wash your hands every time after giving this medication to your pet.
Keep this drug out of the reach of children.
Drug interactions
Please review all medications or supplements that your pet is receiving with your vet.
Overdose
If you suspect that your pet has been overdosed or another pet has consumed hydroxyzine HCl
inadvertently, contact your vet or an emergency centre as soon as possible.
Storage
Store hydroxyzine HCl at room temperature (15-30°C).
