Hydrogen Engine Center NG 250-F94N-E02 250 kW NG Generator Set Utility Power Generator Product Description The natural gas powered Oxx Power brand of utility ready generators is designed for quiet, ultra low emissions. The resulting generator set achieves an industry-first implementation for continuous duty power applications. Engine A specially modified Oxx Power 572 cubic inch dry fuel engine powers the generator set. The engine has reduced friction, increased robustness and specially modified fuel delivery, inter-cooled turbocharger and controls. These controls coupled with the mechanical advances enable reliable operation at higher synchronous speeds of 3,600 RPM. Emissions Natural gas engines have fewer emissions than those powered by diesel and gasoline. Studies have indicated that emissions have been reduced by as much as 1/2 that of other hydrocarbon fuels. Fuel Delivery The fuel delivery system is electronically controlled sequential port injection. Exact fuel delivery using closed loop control methods guarantees proper fuel mixture is maintained. Cooling System The standard cooling system provides reliable operation Specifications and descriptions in this document were in effect at the time of up to 40HEC C. A rugged cast iron cylinder block with D ported Cylinder Heads with Long Reach Mounting Bolts into Main Bearing Bulkhead is used to maintain resistance to heat distortion and provide durability. Cast aluminum intake manifold fitted with hydrogen fuel injectors and accompanying fuel rails provide improved power and efficiency. An Even Firing Order and Internal Balance Shaft enable nearly vibration-free operation. Four bolt mains and priority oiling, industrial intake and exhaust valve insert have been upgraded increasing durability and maintenance intervals. The engine also has 35% better cooling in the block and also in the heads. The designs of both were done to improve longevity of the engine. The D ported heads are tuned for 3400 rpm peak torque and fit perfectly with HECs desire to use 2 pole generators. The intake manifold has been to accept fuel injectors and the larger air flow that comes with large displacement and low equivalence ratios (eqr). These engines are designed to operate with eqrs of .4 and below. This is very lean and requires very good engine management. The engine is supplied with an Electronic Engine Management System controlling key engine functions: Programmable speed set points, constant electronic speed regulation Programmable emergency warning & shutdown features for high water temperature, low oil pressure, etc. Integrated ignition control Starter lockout Over-speed safety shutdown Base Engine Data Displacement: Configuration: Bore/Stroke: Compression: Isochronous Speed: Over-speed Limit: Cranking Current: Alternator: Coupling: Oil Type / Capacity: Oil Filter: Standard Fuel: 9.4 L (572 CID) V-8, Roller Cam 113.4 mm / 113.4 mm 11:1 3,600 RPM (60 Hz) 3,000 RPM (50 Hz) 4,000 RPM 350 amps at 32° F (0° C) 110 Amps Rr engine plate for SAE #3 housing SAE 10W/30, 7.57 L (8 quarts) Spin-On, Full Flow Natural Gas or Flare Gas Power Rating 335 BHP, (250 kW) at 592 ft (150m), 77° F (25° C) De-rating Factors Altitude: 4% per 300 m (984 ft) above 150 m (492 ft) Temperature: 1.5% for every 9° F (5° C) Above 77° F Intake Restriction: 1.2% per 1 kPa above 1.25 kPa Exhaust Restriction: 2% per 7 kPa above 3.8 kPa Fuel Consumption Natural Gas BTU rating 1020 BTU/ft3 (38.2 MJ/m3) 191.5 g/kW-Hr (42 Ft3/Min at full load) Fuel Pressure: 103 kPa (15psig) to 517 kPa (75 psig) Low Emissions Battery System Voltage: 12 V, Negative Ground, 350 CCA Mounting: Skid mounted Tray, Hold-Down & Cables’ 3c Battery Charger, Line Powered, 3 A Options Specifications and descriptions in this document were in effect at the time of publication. Tests to verify the electromagnetic compatibility have been carried out as required by the standards. The robust mechanical construction gives good access to the generator output connections, and allows the user to inspect the various components with ease. The casing is made of steel, the shields of cast iron, and the shaft of with an integral keyed cooling fan. The mechanical protection level meets standard IP21. Insulation materials meet Class H requirements, and all rotating components are epoxy resins impregnated; higher voltage parts, such as the stators, are vacuum treated. Radio interference suppression meets the requirements of grade “N” of VDE 0875 regulations. Filters designed for more stringent regulations, (such as VDE 0875, grade “K”, MIL 461E) are available upon special request. The panel includes basic display and fault indications with front panel programmable configuring. The generator set controller provides three operational modes: Run, Off and Automatic. The modes are front panel switch selectable positions. Mode Position Descriptions: (1) (2) (3) Run: Manually initiates engine start and run Off: Stops the engine and resets the machine shutdown and lockout faults Automatic: Engine is started by closing a remote start contact and stopped when it is opened The Automatic switch position enables the engine to start automatically when the normal electric power fails or falls below specific limits and to stop the engine automatically after the normal power supply resumes. The signal for starting or stopping the engine is sensed through a switch closure in an auxiliary contact located in the automatic transfer switch. Poplar Street www.hydrogenenginecenter.com Algona, IA 50511 USA Hydrogen Engine Center 250 kW NG Generator Set Utility Power NG 250-F94N-E02 HISTORY Hydrogen Engine Center's beginning was in 2003. The company was created with the objective of producing stationary, distributive, power, for industrial clients. The idea was to provide “added value” by specializing in "alternative fuels", such as hydrogen, natural gas, anhydrous ammonia, methanol, propane, and syn-gas. Even though HEC utilized most of its resources in developing new technology, nearly 1500 engines and gensets have been successfully sent to the field. HEC has made significant technological advancements in its first 10 years of existence. Among them, we have patented a special alignment hub which allows our gensets to run at 3600 rpm, twice as fast as our competitors, producing twice as much power. This gives us what we call an “unfair advantage”, since it gives us a special price advantage. HEC has designed and built two special engines patterned after the Ford 300 and the Ford 460 engines. Over 30 modifications, including specialized electronic controls and a proprietary fuel injection system have been made, to make these engines truly unique. HEC has developed the largest internal combustion, spark-ignited, hydrogen engine, creating over 200 kW of power, with one genset. This has only been made possible by the invention of a special HEC intake manifold. To be recognized in the “distributive power sector” reaching a one megawatt milestone is an important achievement. HEC has reached this pinnacle of success with its N+1 technology, allowing multiple gensets to be installed in parallel, creating multiple megawatts of power. The company was the first to ever run an internal combustion, spark-ignited, engine on anhydrous ammonia; which we believe will play an important role in the future of hydrogen. The uniqueness and significance of what we are doing has been recognized by the patent office. An important patent involving the use of anhydrous ammonia and hydrogen in an internal combustion engine was granted to the company in the fall of 2011. This was "a first" since no other governmental agency even recognizes anhydrous ammonia as a fuel. The future of HEC will be in the exploitation of its technology by manufacturing and marketing gensets. While continuing to play a leadership role in developing power with the use of hydrogen and other alternative fuels, we feel it is important to respond to market forces. Natural gas being a much cleaner fuel than diesel, reducing pollution by up to ½, is an area that we will be targeting more aggressively in the future.
