ARC FAULT DETECTION UNIT INSTALLATION MANUAL Version 07-22-13
Important safety precautions Attention! Components in the installations are exposed to high voltages and currents. Follow these instructions carefully in order to reduce the risk of fire or electric shock. The following regulations and standards are considered applicable and mandatory to read prior to the installation of electrical equipment: • International Standards: IEC 60364‐7‐712 Electrical installations of buildings – Requirements for special installations or locations ‐ Solar Photovoltaic (PV) power supply systems. • USA specific Standards: National electric Code (NEC) ‐ article 690 and applicable UL standards. • All other local building regulations and legislation at the time of installation. Please Note! • It is essential to uphold the limits for voltage and current in all possible operating conditions (see; ‘Technical Data’). Also keep in mind the literature on correct dimensioning and sizing of cabling and components. • The installation of Arc Fault Detection Units may only be performed by properly trained technical personnel. • All the installation works should be tested in accordance with relevant local legislation. General notice for users and installers • Changes or modifications not explained/approved in this manual could void your authority to operate this equipment. • DC Sun Volt or EE Controls shall not be held responsible for any damage caused due to incorrect installation of the product and/or the misunderstanding of this manual. • DC Sun Volt reserves the right to make any modification to this manual or the information contained herein at any time without notice. • To ensure the recycling of all possible materials and proper disposal treatment of components, please return the product to DC Sun Volt at end‐of‐life. • The Arc Fault Detection unit is explicitly designed to detect series arcs in a system. It does not detect other sorts of other system faults. • Make sure the alarm signal can be well heard and proper follow up in case of an alarm is guaranteed. • Check the system regularly (monthly) on faults Dimensions ARC FAULT DETECTION UNIT CONTENT & TECHNICAL DATA String specifications Maximal string voltage/current Number of poles Maximal cable diameter cage clamp Power specifications Power supply Current consumption (passive) Current consumption (active) Maximal cable diameter connector (2P) Alarm specifications Alarm relay load (resistive) Minimal arc detection level Maximal cable diameter connector (3P) Arc fault detection UL1699B ‐ PV AFD Other specifications Protection degree Operating temperature range Storage temperature range Humidity range (RH) Weight (approx.) After finishing the self test the green LED will be on continuously. Normal operation: The arc fault detection unit will monitor the current flow and analyze the signal measured to determine if there is an arc fault situation. It will do this continuously until an arc fault occurs and/or the DC power supply is removed. Arc fault situation: In case an arc fault is detected the ADU will signal this with a blinking red LED (fault). At the same time a buzzer will sound with for 30 seconds, after 30 seconds the buzzer will only sound once a minute. Also the alarm output will change state. !! MAKE SURE THAT THE CAUSE FOR THE ARC IS RESOLVED !! The arc fault situation can be resolved by briefly pressing the reset button with a small pin (soft reset). Fault situation: In case an error occurs or if the self test fails, the unit will indicate this with the blinking red and green LED’s, also the buzzer will sound and the relay output will change state. This fault situation can be resolved by pressing the reset button for longer than 5 seconds with a small pin (hard reset) or by removing and applying the power. If the fault situation keeps occurring please contact Santon for more information: [email protected] Intended Use The Arc Fault Detection Unit (ADU) is especially developed as detection device for direct current (DC) photovoltaic installations. The ADU is made to detect arc faults within the range from 100Vdc ‐ 1A to 1000Vdc ‐ 40A (according to the UL1699B). The ADU is connected in the positive or negative pole of the solar cabling. The unit may be installed anywhere in the installation but is preferably installed in a easily accessible location. The Arc Fault Detection Unit will monitor the current flow on string level and in case of an arc fault will signal this through the fault LED, the buzzer and the alarm output connector. The alarm output connector can be used to activate external alarms/actuators for correct follow up of the arc fault detection. When the fault is resolved, the fault situation can be reset by gently pressing the reset button with a small pin (soft reset) and the ADU will resume monitoring. The protection degree of the ADU is limited to IP20/NEMA1. The unit needs to be protected against external influences, therefore the unit must be placed in a separate enclosure with the desired protection degree.
