Z Z Plant Zamioculcas Zamiiofolia (Araceaea). This tropical plant is a native of eastern Africa. The plant has thick succulent stem with smooth, waxy, glossy leaves that usually grow to 16” to 32”. Its foliage grows from underground tubers that store water. Temperature: Average warmth 68˚ to 75˚ Light: Use low to moderate light. Avoid any direct sunlight as this may burn or cause damage to the leaves. Water: Water the soil only when it dries out. Never over water, and ensure that there is good drainage. Usually every two weeks is sufficient, but it may be able to go longer in between watering. Repotting: It is best to use a fast draining soil like a cactus and succulent mix. Only increase pot by one size when replanting, plants prefer tight spaces. Propagation: Can be done by leaf cuttings or division of tubers. Fertilizer: When plant is actively growing fertilize once a month. Dilute water soluble plant food to quarter strength of recommended concentration. Do not use leaf shine on this plant. The Z Z plant is considered a very reliable houseplant because it requires very little water and is not prone to disease or insects. Turn the pot from time to time, so new leaves (growing towards the light) won’t bring it out of balance. Caution should be taken around pets as this plant is known to contain Oxalate crystals.
