Osmanthus americanus Devilwood, Wild Olive Osmanthus americanus is an evergreen small tree or large shrub. Leaves are a leathery, dark olive green. The outer bark is silvery gray, the inner bark is cinnamon colored. The wood is very hard and tough, the 'devil' to split, a trait to be admired when strong winds come. Devilwood has a shallow, fibrous root system. Small, fragrant, white flowers begin forming in the fall and open in early spring. O. americanus occurs in a variety of areas through the Coastal Plain region. Plant it in moist loose soils for best performance. Devilwood displays good drought tolerance and establishes fairly well. Osmanthus americanus rivals its well-known relative, Tea Olive, for fragrance. Height: 20’ – 30’ Spread: 15’ – 20’
