Pink Elephant Fleeceflower Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Pink Elephant' Height: 18 inches Spread: 24 inches Sunlight: Hardiness Zone: 4a Other Names: Knotweed, Snakeweed, Polygonum Description: An easy to grow, long blooming perennial that produces loads of narrow, pink, bottlebrush spiked flowers for many weeks beginning in early summer; an interesting groundcover that displays color all season long Ornamental Features: Pink Elephant Fleeceflower features beautiful spikes of pink flowers rising above the foliage from mid summer to early fall, which are most effective when planted in groupings. The flowers are excellent for cutting. It's pointy leaves remain dark green in colour throughout the season. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. The burgundy stems can be quite attractive. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This perennial will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. Its foliage tends to remain dense right to the ground, not requiring facer plants in front. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years. This perennial does best in full sun to partial shade. It is quite adaptable, prefering to grow in average to wet conditions, and will even tolerate some standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This plant can be propagated by division. This is a selected variety of a species not originally from North America.
