Montezuma Cypress
(Taxodium mucronatum)
A fast-growing, large tree up to 70’ at maturity, with an irregular, rounded or flat-topped crown and drooping
branchlets. Male "flowers" in long clusters that resemble oak catkins, female "flowers" are small and inconspicuous.
Montezuma Cypress has delicate, light green leaves that are flattened, very narrow, and arranged in feather-like fashion
along two sides of slender branchlets; and semi-evergreen or deciduous. While Montezuma Cypress does very well in
aquatic areas, it is also quite drought tolerant. Unlike the more well-known Bald Cypress, Montezuma Cypress does
not produce “knees”.
