Frequently
Asked Questions
WHEN CAN I EXPECT BLOOMS?
These will bloom from late spring throughout mid-summer
every year beginning the second season. The first season
they begin blooming in late summer or early autumn.
The first season flowering is much less than will occur in
subsequent seasons. They like to be fed once a week.
DO THEY LIKE WET FEET?
Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain
through the bottom of the pot. Be sure to keep excess
water out of any saucer underneath pot. Keep moist,
especially during the spring and summer repeating twice a
week all summer long. Water once a week or less in winter.
WHAT IS NEEDED FOR WINTER CARE?
Plants rest from November through April. They may drop
some foliage though not much. Place in a bright-lighted
room or sunny window and reduce watering to once a
week.
IS THERE ANY GOOD PEST PREVENTION?
Monthly misting with a solution of soapy water will insure
glossy pest free leaves. Mix one half teaspoon of standard
liquid dish soap in quart spray bottle of water, shake, and
mist the plant profusely.
MY PLANT LOST IT LEAVES BECAUSE IT GOT TOO COLD
If you leave it outside in the fall too late and temperatures
drop below 50F, the leaves will probably fall away. Bring
them back inside and the leaves will grow back. If they do
lose their leaves, you should cut them back to about two
thirds of their size.
DO I NEED TO PRUNE THEM?
Pruning is not necessary. However you can prune about
one half of plant every autumn. Cut only about top 6 inches
of growth away from no more than half of plant’s stems.

Eric, Kevin, and Koort Wallien
Tahitian Tiare Gardenia
(Gardenia taitensis)
When your plant arrives from Roberta’s, remove from the
shipping box immediately.
When ready to plant, do the job as early in the day as
possible to avoid extreme soil temperatures that prevent
proper water uptake from the roots. Water them in well
and whisper a few words of wisdom.
planting and growing guide
Roberta’s is a 4th generation family owned business and
has been one of the leading commercial exhibitors at
flower and garden shows for over 50 years in the U.S.
and abroad. We search the globe to find easy-to-grow
plants that are unique in themselves or their variety
making them nearly impossible to find elsewhere. Our
passion and commitment continually asks the question,
“What makes a better, unsurpassed, and more beautiful
flower to behold?”
First Things First...
Remove plastic bag and/or sleeve from around potted
plant(s). Discard any packing material clinging to the
leaves or soil. Pull away any yellow or brown leaves that
may have occurred during transit. If you can not plant it
into garden or larger pot within a few days, make sure it
stays well watered.

Planting Guide
1
step
Unpack your plants immediately removing any packing
material. Water immediately. Cut away any yellow
or brown leaves or broken stems that may have
occurred. This grooming is completely normal and will
take place as the plant grows. New leaves and stems
appear as the old ones are cut away.
2
Transplant into larger 6 inch containers separately or
together in even a larger container. Water again. Keep
moist, repeating 2 times a week all summer.
3
You may place plants outside as long as evening
temperatures stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Plants prefer full sun though half day is sufficient.

Continuing Care
NATURE ATTRACTION
Wonderfully fragrant and heavily borne over a long
season, they are an indispensable part of every container
garden. They will attract you and your significant other all
summer long to their richly scented jasmine-like fragrance.
KEY TIPS
Remove spent blossoms to encourage new blooms. Keep
moist not soggy. They respond to regular weekly fertilizing
with a high bloom houseplant food. Monthly misting with a
solution of soapy water will insure glossy pest free leaves.
Mix half teaspoon of standard liquid dish soap in a quart
spray bottle of water, shake, and mist the plant profusely.
SHELF LIFE
Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain
through the bottom of the pot(s). Transplant into larger
6 inch containers separately or together in even a larger
container.
PLANT PREPARATION
Cut away any yellow or brown leaves or broken stems that
may have occurred. This grooming is completely normal
and will take place as the plant grows.
POTTED PLANTS
Repot the plants into larger 6 inch pots separately or
together inside one larger container.
SOIL
They prefer bagged potting mixes for houseplants that will
drain well. Most garden centers carry various brand names
with perlite, vermiculite, soil and sand.
GARDEN PREPARATION
If you live where it rarely dips below 50 degrees, they
may be planted directly into the garden. If your soil is
clayish amend it with a standard garden soil for adequate
drainage.
PLANTING SPACING
If planting in garden or together in one container space 12
inches apart.
PLANT HEIGHT
These will grow 20 to 30 inches in about 18 months.
WATER
Water the plants thoroughly letting the excess water drain
through the bottom of the pot. Be sure to keep excess
water out of any saucer underneath pot. Keep moist,
especially during the spring and summer repeating twice a
week all summer long. Water once a week or less in winter.
FERTILIZER
To promote more flowers use a well balanced fertilizer like
Roberta’s Flower Magic Plant Food (M7503) once a week
all April through October.
LIGHTING
Full sun is best. Otherwise a half a day of sun is sufficient.
BLOOMING
These will bloom from late spring throughout mid-summer
every year. The first season they begin blooming a little
later than normal.
TEMPERATURE ZONE 9 to 11
These are hardy down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit
without damaging the plant. If you live where it rarely dips
below 40 degrees, they may remain outside year round.
WINTER DORMANCY
Plants rest from November through April. They may drop
some foliage though not much. Place in a bright-lighted
room or sunny window and reduce watering to once a
week.
PRUNING
Pruning is not necessary. However you can prune about
one half of plant every autumn. Cut only about top 6
inches of growth away from no more than half of plant’s
stems.
GROOMING
Remove spent flowers. In addition, cut away any yellow,
brown leaves or broken stems that naturally occur.
Monthly misting with a solution of soapy water will insure
glossy pest free leaves. Mix half teaspoon of standard
liquid dish soap in a quart spray bottle of water, shake,
and mist the plant profusely.
CUT FLOWERS
They make excellent cut flowers floated in water.
