Beautiful, divided, fresh green leaves make a pleasing clump. The flowers are produced earlier in the season than those of other species; they are pure white branching bottle-‐
brushes; late flowering stems are frequently produced. Blooming season is summer. Plants 5' tall, 2' wide.
Lacy black foliage on dark 2' stems complements purple-‐tinted fragrant white flowers for an eye catching accent or contrast.
Fronds 12"-‐30" long, deciduous, rising from a short-‐creeping, horizontal, colony-‐forming rhizome. The stalk of the frond forks nearly in half with the two parts curving back, each having 3-‐5 finger-‐like divisions, each in turn bearing 12-‐20 pairs of oblong segments.
Leaves deciduous, upt to 28cm long and 1.3cm wide, upright, strongly ribbed beneath. Peduncle 45-‐70cm tall. Inflorescence of 20-‐25 flowers. Insides of the flowers are violet-‐blue (92A), segmets sometimes recurved, 2.9cm long (tube 1cm), 3.8cm across. Mainly seed propagated since its introduction and so better to regard this as a group of plants that look similar rather than a proper cultivar.
Plants reach 3" in height forming a mat of conjested mounding narrow, chocolate-‐
brown foliage; flowers are dark lavender-‐
blue, effective in spring.
Rather small, up to 20 cm, usually compact, with neat, orbicular, densely hairy leaves, often sericeous; hairs patent or erecto-‐
patent on all parts of the plant. Downy, rounded leaves and a copious display of airy tiny greeny-‐yellow stars borne in feathery sprays. Prolonged flowering period. Plants 18" tall, and 2' wide.

Plants reach 24-‐30" in height; flowers are dark purple, held above green and gold variegated foliage.
Unarmed herbaceous perennial to 2.7m. Fruit black, about 3mm diameter.
Closely resembling A. racemosa, but umbels larger, to 35 or 40mm diameter. Rootstock similar to A. cordata.
A distinctive subspecies of A. flavum, found in Tibet at altitudes of up to 4000m in dry, sunny locations. Far more ornamental than the common A. flavum subsp. abbreviatum, its relatively large bright yellow inflorescence stands well above the pedate foliage. The spathe is held horizontally, so that a blooming clump appears to be studded with little yellow flags waving in the wind.
To 40cm. Leaf solitary, radiate, leaflets 10-‐
20x2-‐4cm, 7-‐13, lanceolate, long-‐acuminate. Peduncle to 15cm; spathe dark purple, limb broad-‐ovate, strongly incurved, cuspidate, interior marked white; spadix appendix to 18cm, slender, tapering above, long-‐
exserted. Leaves 2, leaflets 15-‐20cm, 3, broad-‐ovate, long-‐acuminate, apex filiform, glossy green; petiole green or tinged purple, exceeding peduncle. Flowers appear before the leaves are fully developed. Flowers of variable coloring, but usually seen with the black-‐maroon spathe, the hooded portion green and brown striped over a pure white knobbed spadix and throat. Leaves handsome, three-‐lobed. Plants 18" tall, 18" wide. Spring blooming.

A selection in which the leaves have a green border and the central area is swirled with paler shades of gray-‐green and chartreuse.
The narrowly spear-‐shaped leaves are conspicuously marbled with grey and cream. The leaves are produced in autumn. The flowers are greenish-‐white with purplish staining at the base and creamy spadices. The flowers are fleeting in spring, but in summer, stout stalks support columns of orange-‐red berries, at which time a group is made highly conspicuous, though bare of leaves. Plants 18" tall, 12" wide. Spring blooming.
Males more attractive and feathery in bloom, but females provide attractive seed heads which persistinto winter. Plants 6-‐7' tall, 4' wide.
Evergreen; leaves 2, to 3" across, uniformly green, glossy, petioles to 5" long; flowers greenish-‐purple orbrown, 1/2" long.
This is a Siberian asparagus that we acquired many years ago from seed collector Alexandra Berkutenko. The branched stems make soft arching plumes in the garden, and the female plants are smothered in plump red berries in fall. Because it is relatively short, we recommend placing it near the front of the border, with the caveat that like most asparagus it is relatively late to emerge.
Fronds to 30 cm long; apex crested.

Rhizome short, upright; fronds oblong-‐
lanceolate, simple, 30-‐60 cm long, often shorter, 4-‐8 cm wide, clustered; solitary plants are regularly funnel-‐form. Fronds often undulate, cordate, the tip acute or obtuse, glossy dark green, leathery, persistent, sori linear, yellow-‐green at first, later clustered in thickbrown rows.
Introduced 1929. (`Brautschleier'). Elegant open sprays of pure white open from bright green buds andturn to creamy yellow as they fade. Plants to 2 1/2' tall.
Plants are very floriferous with pink flowers. The healthy dark green foliage contrasts nicely to the bright flower color.
Flowers light rose-‐pink borne on 26" tall stems in midseason foliage light green.
Purchased from Andre Viette Farm and Nursery; no description was provided in the 1987 Viette catalog.
Large, graceful, open arching pale pink sprays. Handsome foliage. Plants to 4' tall; midseasonblooming. Cultivated since 1917.
Plants 3' to 6' tall, glandular-‐hairy above; leaves petioled, 2 or 3 times ternately compound, the leafletspetiolulate or sessile, oblong to ovate, rounded to subcordate at the base, acuminate, sharply serrate;petals narrowly oblanceolate, 2 mm, often none in pistillate flowers; follicles connivent, 4 mm (DS 179).Tall and stately with creamy-‐white plumes and excellent foliage (DS 278).
Plants 18" tall, blooming in mid to late summer. Flowers are dark pink and open from deep red buds. Foliage is bronze green.
Waxy foliage is a deep blue-‐green with a light silver overlay. Astilbe 'Delft Lace' PPAF flowers in midsummer with clusters of deep salmon pink buds that open to a soft apricot pink. This new variety is reported to have more attractive foliage and stronger flower stems than 'Peach Blossom'. 24-‐36" tall, 24" spread.
Plants 12"-‐18" tall with dark green foliage; flowers rose-‐pink, borne in midsummer. Plants spread well and make a good groundcover in fertile soil.

Plants with completely solid silver leaves. Springtime brings clusters of tiny Wedgewood blue flowers which float above the foliage. Brunnera 'Mr. Morse' is an elegant white flowering cultivar of Brunnera. The foliage consists of dark green heart shaped leaves that are frosted with a silver overlay. Green veins of the leaves give a crackle like finish to the silvered foliage. 'Mr. Morse' offers three seasons of interest with pearl white flowers in the spring and deer-‐resistant foliage that looks great right up to frost.
Graceful mound of shining rounded leaves is topped with brownish branching stems covered with single flowers filled with rich yellow stamens. Plants 18" tall.

Very vigorous and topped with near-‐white flowers. A large hosta that is a sport of H. 'Sagae'. Beautifully shaped thick green leaves with a very wide yellow border that later fades to creamy-‐white. Lavender flowers in early summer.
Foreground size for specimen use. Round, cupped leaves have excellent substance, puckering, and an exceptional intense blue coloration. Performs best in shade to 3/4 sun (DS 111). Blue color of foliage holds up well in considerable sun; vigorous. Floriferous, producing numerous pale lavender flowers. Performs best in shade to 1/4 sun. Hybridized by Paul Aden (DS 133).
A large mound of neatly rippled, dark green foliage; semi-‐upright mound habit, growing to 26" tall by 52" wide. Catalog description applies to the type -‐ the special characteristics of 'Amazone' are not identified.
A cross between the tall garden phlox P. paniculata and woodland creeping phlox, P. stolonifera. Height reflects both parents as it reaches only 12-‐15". Spread is about a foot reflecting the tall phlox. Many rosy-‐pink flowers over a good period.
A bicolor cross of David and Shortwood -‐ each petal half white / half pink giving a pinwheet effect. 24-‐30" tall; mildew resistant.
Eva Cullum' is a garden phlox cultivar that typically grows in an upright clump to 2-‐3' tall. Fragrant, tubular flowers (1/2" to 1" diameter). Long mid to late summer bloom sometimes extends into early fall. Narrow, opposite, pointed, lance-‐shaped leaves (to 5" long). An introduction of Blooms of Bressingham in England (Eva Cullum was a former department head at Bloom's Nursery).
Discovered along the Harpeth River in Tennessee, Phlox 'Jeana' makes a floriferous 4' tall clump, topped all summer and well into fall with 6" flower heads of 0.5" lavender pink flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Trialed at Plant Delights since 2000 and showing no sign of mildew.
Perfectly formed, baby-‐pink blooms are extremely long lasting and appear over dark green, very mildew resistant foliage. This strong, sturdy, upright phlox is 30-‐36" tall and 24" across.
Easy to grow phlox that loves full sun. Delightful pink and white striped flowers will appear in late spring and cover the foliage of this low-‐growing perennial. Grows to 4-‐6" tall and spreads 12-‐18".

Strong stems hold rich deep royal crimson spikes. Very long blooming.
A selection of this North American native with showy sky blue flower spikes to 4' in late summer through fall. It differs from the species in having hairy stems, larger flowers than the species and is more robust. ‘Nekan’ (abbreviation of Nebraska and Kansas) is a seed strain that was found growing in the wild in an area north of Lincoln, Nebraska. It features whorls of 2-‐lipped, sky blue flowers in spikes atop stiff stems with linear grayish-‐
green leaves. H: 24-‐48" W: 24-‐36"
18" x 24" wide. The quilted gray foliage is an attractive backdrop to the spikes of pure blue flowers. Germander Sage loves sun and heat and should be planted in a loamy, well-‐
drained soil. It blooms most heavily in early summer and again in the fall. The plant spreads by underground roots to form impressive mounding specimens. Native of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains of Mexico.
Perennial herb 25-‐100cm. Stems erect, simple or occasionally branched.Verticillasters 4-‐8-‐flowered, calyx ovate-‐campanulate, 8-‐12mm, teeth rather spinose, glandular-‐pilose; corolla 20-‐30mm, violet-‐blue to pinkish-‐magenta, with white or yellow markings particularly on lower lip, tube curved upwards, exserted, upper lip deeply bifid, falcate. Plants are 25" tall with wonderful lilac-‐pink flower spikes June-‐Aug.
Plants reach 18" in flower and produce spikes of deep purple flowers. Best with moisture and half-‐shade.
Broad, golden-‐yellow leaves look good throughout the growing season; fruits bright cherry-‐red, plants vigorous.
'Redbug' is a hybrid between S. rubra and S. wherryi introduced by the North Carolina Botanical Garden. True to most hybrids 'Redbug' is quite vigorous in the garden bog. Expect to see slender clumps of red pitchers, heavily veined in brown-‐red, with chubby cobra-‐like flaring pitchers. Height is about eight inches.

To 1m. Rhizome creeping. Leaves 2-‐3 pinnate, bright green. Inflorescence an erect, narrow-‐ovoid, many flowered panicle, fragrant; sepals 4, pale yellow, 3mm; stamens erect, exceeding sepals; filaments threadlike. Achenes to 15, sessile.
Glabrous perennial; upper leaves 2-‐pinnate, leathery, the leaflets obtuse, entire, or the terminal ones3-‐lobed. Flowers few in panicles, bisexual, the sepals white, oblong, 1/4" long, stamens as long, somewhat clavate; achenes many, fusiform, stipitate, 10-‐ to 12-‐nerved.
Plants to 5' tall with nearly black stems, contrasting green leaves and topped by fluffy lavender flowers in large flat-‐ topped corymbs.
Heaven bound and steadfast, 9 ft. tall, crimson tinted stalks, clothed with lacy grayish green fernlike foliage, have a willowy architectural appeal. Myriad lavender-‐pink flowers, centered by cream-‐colored stamens, compose a massive, yet sprightly pastel cloud, which envelopes the entire upper 3 ft. of each impressive plant nearly all summer long. Blooms late June–September. 5'–9' high x 2' wide.
Plants reach 6'-‐8' in height and produce sprays of lavender flowers in summer. ** I wonder if there is a distinct cultivar 'Lavender Mist' or if this is just a common name that over time has been incorrectly raised to cultivar status. I can find no manuals that describe this cultivar, only nursery catalogs, and their descriptionsw do not differ from that of the species.
Clump-‐forming plants form 8"-‐12" tall mounds of dark green distinctly lobed and serrated foliage; flowers are deep pink, effective in spring.
Plants stoloniferous and trailing, reaching 8" in height, and bearing white flowers above unusually-‐textured, light green foliage.
Compact plants reach 15" in height; large grape-‐purple flowers open intermittently from May to September.
Plants reach 18"-‐24" in height with large orchid-‐pink flowers.

Upright, suckering tightly multi-‐stemmed shrub, 6' to 20' tall. The white flowers are borne in erect, compact, 2" to 3" long racemes and the petals are more distinctly and uniformly obovate than in A. arborea or A. laevis, and somewhat shorter, 3/5" long. Fruit is black, juicy and sweet. A. canadensis flowers about two weeks earlier than A. arborea and A. laevis. Fall color is usually yellow and gold, although individuals can have sprinklings of orange and red.
Closely allied to A. arborea, but differs by reason of the bronzy color of the unfolding leaves and their lackof pubescence as well as the almost glabrous pedicels and peduncle of the inflorescence (DS 9). A small tree or occasionally large shrub; profuse fragrant white flowers in May, interspersed with delicate pink foliage. The leaves assume rich autumnal tints (DS 58).
Plants 60' to 75' in height, occasionally to 100'. Fall color yellow. Bark on young stems and branches isyellowish or bronze and produces thin papery shreds, gradually changing to reddish brown and breaking into large, ragged edged plates.
Size 6' to 8' tall and 6' to 10' wide. Growing conditions, in all settings for sun. Flowers, yellow green, in spring and summer, leaves deciduous.
Small tree or large shrub with several large, crooked, spreading branches forming an irregular, rounded, open crown, reaching 20' to 30' in height and 15' to 20' in spread. Fall color a good yellow; can bespectacular. Flowers yellow, fragrant.
Northern type; similar to 'Afterglow' with smaller, dark red fruits and more upright growth habit; alsoslower to fruit heavily. Early blooming; requires 'Dwarf Male' for pollination. Found in the wild in West Virginia, selected for profuse, dark red fruits and slightly upright form (American Nurseryman February 2009).

Very small shrub, reaching only 2' to 4' in height, yet has larger fruits than any other I. verticillata selection. Slow-‐growing, broader than tall, producing bright red, 1/2" diameter fruits in abundance on very short pedicels. Leaves broad, oval, not glossy. Originated as a wild seedling discovered near Hampden Nurseries, MA by the nursery's founder Peter Sicbaldi (American Nurseryman February 2009).
Shrub with erect, clustered branches, branched only near the top, reaching 3' to 5, possibly 10' in height, spreading to form large colonies. notes
Ray flowers larger, up to 1 3/4" in diameter, raised on a 2 1/2" peduncle that brings the flower above thefoliage. Habit is distinctly horizontal and a plant in full flower is a magnificent sight. The leaves mayturn reddish purple in fall. I have read accounts that state that this is the best fruiting form and also thatfruit is sparsely set; I have not resloved this discrepancy in my own mind.
