This means that we have only one plenary session, where everybody can learn from everybody. We will have plenty of time for social contacts and discussions and there will be the mid-conference excursion on Wednesday to Milan and of course, the final dinner and party on Friday. Since 150 people registered we decided to give the poster presentations extra attention. Everybody who presents (only) a poster gets the opportunity to give an “advertising talk” of three minutes. We hope these talks will generate attention, questions and discussion during the poster sessions that immediately follow these oral presentations. Preceding both poster presentations on Tuesday and Thursday we will have these talks. Another highlite of the symposium will be the lectures of two invited plenary speakers, Winfried Lampert from Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Ploen, Germany on Monday, Oct 3, and John Colbourne from. Indiana University, Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics in Bloomington, USA on Tuesday, Oct 4. The Scientific Program The submitted abstracts were sorted in several theme groups. Sometimes this task was a bit difficult because certain themes seem to be more popular among the visiting scientist than others. Nevertheless we are convinced that the talks and posters presented during this conference give a good overview of the actual research done on Cladocera. Special issue of Hydrobiologia Hydrobiologia publishes original articles in the fields of limnology and marine science that are of interest to th abroad and international audience. A special issue about the IX International Symposium on Cladocera will be published next year. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2011. Further information will be published on www.cladocera2011.org. About CNR ISE Verbania Pallanza The institutes mission is based on basic and applied research activity in the field of freshwaterwater and terrestrial ecosystems, and how these react to the impact of global climate change and anthropogenic pressure. The two main research topics of CNR ISE are a) theStructure and functioning of water and land ecosystems and b) techniques for the protection and recovery of water and soil quality. CNR ISE’s Headquarter is in Verbania Pallanza, with sections in Florence, Pisa and Sassari. Permanent staff of the ISE numbers 66 employees (35 researchers, 19 technicians and 12 administrative staff). The Institute publishes two international journals: Journal of Limnology (http://www.jlimnol.it) and Tropical Zoology (http://ejour-fup.unifi.it/index.php/tropicalzoology/index). 2 th VII International Symposium on Cladocera Program Scientific knowledge and know-how is transmitted nationally and internationally by publications, lectures, teaching, and consulting to the private and public sector. About Eawag Clean waters are not self-evident. Switzerland spends annually billions of Swiss Francs to attain this objective. Numerous developing and newly industrialized countries suffer from acute water shortage. Eawag's task as the national research centre for water pollution control is to ensure that: Concepts and technologies pertaining to the use of natural waters are continuously improved. Ecological, economical and social water interests are brought into line. Research, Teaching, Consulting for the Environment Multidisciplinary teams of specialists in the fields of Environmental Engineering, Natural and Social Sciences jointly develop solutions to environmental problems. The acquired knowledge and know-how is transmitted nationally and internationally by publications, lectures, teaching, and consulting to the private and public sector. 400 employees are active at the locations in Dübendorf (near Zurich) and Kastanienbaum (near Lucerne). The Eawag was founded in 1936 as an information centre for wastewater treatment of the ETH Zurich. The Eawag is a Swiss Federal Research Institute which reports to the Board of Management of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (FIT Board). Other Institutes of the FIT Domain are: ETHZ, EPFL, PSI, WSL, EMPA. About the Conference Meeting Site: Il Chiostro Il Chiostro Hotel is located in the historical centre of Verbania, a town on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, surrounded by the beauty of the lake and of the Alps. The hotel is set in a wisely renovated 17th century Augustinian monastery and it is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday or for business conferences, workshops or simply meetings in a very quiet environment. From the marvellous inner cloister to the ancient cellars, form the amphitheatre to the rooms whose walls are decorated with frescoes, each area can welcome work groups or associations that will find here a cosy and familiar environment. The ancient monastery’s glassy stillness, its 13 finely renovated halls and the marvellous 17th century cloister create a unique atmosphere for meetings and workshops. The nine small halls, overlooking the cloister, are cosy, comfortable and quiet. Their seating capacity ranges from ten to thirty and they combine the ancient monastery’s tranquillity with a warm welcome. The hall with the fireplace, the frescoes hall, the inner garden, the ancient cellars and all the other halls are the ideal place to meet or pray, while four bigger halls, with conference facilities, can host from 50 to 220 group or association members. A small church, inside “Il Chiostro”, welcomes those who want to organize religious or meditation meetings. Accommodation All rooms during the conference are managed by the people of Il Chiostro. The students will stay at Centro San Francesco, which is at walking distance to the hote. There is also a bus, Urbano Verbania line (no.2), leaving at Piazza Cavour (next to the hotel) in direction of Pallanza. The bus stops at Pallanza Playa (Santuario Santa Rita) just in front of Centro San Francesco. All meals will be at Il Chiostro.Contact the conference organizers in the lime t-shirts for help. 3 h 2011, Verbania IX International Symposium on Cladocera Contact info of the hotels:. On our way back we will have a wine tasting with a typical dinner of Italy’s northern region. The busses will bring us back to the Hotel respectively the Hostel. Conference Dinner The Conference Dinner is on Friday and will be on “Isola Bella”. Instructions for Poster Presenters, Oral Presenters, and Session Chairs Abstracts Abstracts for this meeting will be posted and archived on the conference web site (http://www.cladocera2011.org), and a complete book of abstracts will be distributed to registered attendees at the meeting. Poster Presentations Posters will be on display during the whole conference. Every poster is assigned a number (see list of posters), you should put your poster in the area indicated by the number. There will be two poster sessions. During the first session the posters 1-30 will be presented during the second the posters 31-60. Presenters should be standing at their posters during their poster session. Before the poster session starts we organize “advertising talks”. We ask everybody who presents (just) a poster to prepare 1 – 3 PowerPoint slides. If possible we would like to receive those slides beforehand by E-mail to [email protected] All posters must be dismantled on Friday afternoon, October 7 after the oral presentation. Oral Presentations There will be a Windows 7 computer available with office 2010 and Acrobat X to show your presentations. Please check at home if your presentation is compatible. When you are not sure, bring your presentation as PDF! 5 h 2011, Verbania IX International Symposium on Cladocera Uploading of PowerPoint Presentations Please bring your PowerPoint presentation on a USB-Memory Stick and be sure that we can read your file. Another good strategy is to have a copy available in your E-mail system, so that you can reach it through the internet. Presentations can be uploaded from Sunday, Oct 2 from 19.00 in the evening. Further possibilities are: 7.30 – 8.30 in the morning and from 18.00 -19.00 in the evening. Please be sure that your presentation is on our system at least the day before your presentation. We will provide a preview computers so you can check if your presentation “behaves” the same as at home, and were you can change your presentation when necessary. It will not be possible to use your own lap top computer! All our computers run under Windows 7, PowerPoint presentations created on the Apple platform should work. We prefer that you bring your presentation as .pdf, especially Mac users! Currency Exchange At the moment, one Euro costs around $ 1.40. You cannot exchange money in the conference centre but there are several bancs in Verbania Intra. Additional registration costs (e.g. excursion of conference dinner for spouses) have to be paid cash in Euros at the registration desk. So everybody who paid their registration pays hotel bill on the last day to Il Chiostro directly. Name Badges Everybody should wear her or his name badge all the time. This is your “entrance ticket” to all conference activities. Conference group picture This picture will be made on Monday, October 3 after the early afternoon session (just before tea) in the cloister. Please go outside directly after the talk so that we can handle this quickly. We will try to provide you all with this group picture at the end of the conference, at no extra costs. 6 th VII International Symposium on Cladocera Program Detailed Program 14:00 18:30 20:00 7:00 8:30 22:00 22:00 open end 8:50 8:30 8:50 Chair: 9:10 9:10 9:30 9:30 9:50 9:50 10:10 Sunday, October 2 Registration Buffet Dinner Evening for bilateral talks Monday, October 3 Breakfast Welcome Wieder, Lawrence J.
