Cincom Business Intelligence SOLUTION OVERVIEW Problem Transforming SUPRA PDM data into a data warehouse in order to perform decision-support analysis can be complex and labor-intensive. Thirdparty tools cannot do this effectively, and custom applications may need to be written. Most data warehouses, with their specialized platforms, software and programming techniques, have typically required large capital and operating expenses and could be afforded only by the largest companies and government agencies. Data Warehouse for SUPRA® Your Warehouse Solution for Business Intelligence Challenge More affordable and easy-tosupport, enterprise-wide views of a company’s operational data for decision support are quite a challenge for most organizations. For business intelligence processing, data must be “re-shaped” into a form that is suitable for analysis. For SUPRA PDM users, the transactional data must be extracted, conformed, reorganized and then loaded into a warehouse database that is optimized for analytic processing. Solution Provide the SUPRA PDM community with a cost-effective data warehouse solution that understands the SUPRA PDM data structures and how to optimize the extraction of host data – a solution that knows the platform-specific data types and how to convert them to forms suitable for multi-dimensional analysis. Data Warehouse for SUPRA collects, integrates and stores an organization’s data with the aim of producing accurate and timely management information and supporting data analysis. With its knowledge of SUPRA PDM structures, Data Warehouse for SUPRA provides the technology needed to help you develop and automate the construction and updating of your warehouse data, allowing you to re-shape your SUPRA data for analytic processing. The Data Warehouse for SUPRA layer enables you to develop and then automate the construction and updating of your warehouse data. Data can be directly extracted using Data Access for SUPRA or it can be extracted using other SUPRA utilities. Data Warehouse for SUPRA, supplies a relational database with support for developing J2EE and .Net applications. Its reporting framework allows you to design and deploy reports without the need for programming. This is shown in the following image. J2EE and .Net Apps Jasper Reports Optimized for SUPRA Data Warehouse for SUPRA has been optimized specifically for SUPRA, but it also provides the capability to include data from other systems. It enables you to structure all of the data toward your business intelligence objectives and includes the Extract/Transform/Load (ETL) technology needed to load the data warehouse. Building a data warehouse allows you to structure the data toward your business intelligence objectives. This provides a number of advantages over direct access to data. • Data structures optimized for operational systems can be complex. A data warehouse allows you to restructure data into a schema that is easier for analysts to understand. • Data can be combined from several sources into a unified relational schema. Data Warehouse for SUPRA • The warehouse data can be built incrementally to provide a historical basis for analysis. Data Warehouse • There may be less resource usage on operational systems as data is migrated to the data warehouse. ETL Extract/Transform/Load Data Access for SUPRA SUPRA • Data can be cleansed to meet the needs of analysis or changing standards. Data Warehouse for SUPRA provides the right technology to efficiently extract SUPRA PDM data and transform it to the shapes needed by analytics. Extract/Transform/Load (ETL) technology is provided to help you automate the transformation of data and load the warehouse database. Host Data Facilities are provided to: • Reshape your host data into the physical schema you design for the warehouse database. • Conform heterogeneous data from multiple sources into a standardized form. • Cleanse data to enforce your business rules. • Handle large-volume initial loads and incremental updates. A graphical tool helps you construct and test transformation processes so you don’t need to write complex ETL programs. For example, the following chart is used to show the loading of a client dimension table from two data sources. Client Applications and Reports As with Data Access for SUPRA, you can use JDBC to enable support for J2EE applications and tools, and ODBC and OLEDB to enable support for .Net applications and tools. You can use the JasperReports framework (including iReportDesigner) to produce reports from your warehouse data without programming. This report framework supports multiple output formats, such as PDF and HTML, as well as importing to Excel. It allows runtime input of user selection values and automated scheduling. Extract Options A variety of options are available to extract host data for the warehouse. The Data Warehouse for the SUPRA ETL component integrates with Data Access for SUPRA to allow you to directly extract data, as shown in the following figure. Direct SUPRA Extract ETL Tool Data Warehouse Data Access for SUPRA SUPRA Additional benefits of iReportDesigner include: • GUI design of reports rather than code-based • Run and preview while designing Data Warehouse for SUPRA also provides a mainframe extract utility to unload SUPRA PDM data into flat files. This can be useful for very large extracts where direct access to SUPRA PDM across the network may not be practical. Extracting Data with SUPRA Utilities Mainframe Data Warehouse SUPRA Text files ETL Tool (Transform and load) SUPRA Utilities (Extract) • Graphs, Crosstab reports and sub-report, grouping and sorting features • MDX and SQL wizards to assist in structuring queries to produce exactly the desired results • Variables can be added to the report for totals, averages and counts to supplement the results from the query Supported Platforms Data Warehouse for SUPRA Host Database Operating System z/OS OpenVMS HP-UX (Unix) Database SUPRA 2.7.00 SUPRA 2.5.00 SUPRA 1.3.10 Data Warehouse Operating System Windows Added Value • Efficient extraction using knowledge of PDM structures • Rich toolset for re-shaping the data into analytic forms • Cost effective, incremental packaging – install and deploy just the components that you need • Cincom Professional Services helps you “get it right” the first time Business Intelligence for SUPRA Business Intelligence for SUPRA is a set of integrated data access, ETL/data warehouse and analytics solutions.
