27th September 2011 Crowning Glory! Ceramic crowns in a single visit, thanks to new dentistry technology! Ceramic fillings, veneers and crowns are a popular choice in dentistry, thanks to both the cosmetic and practical advantages of this hard-wearing, long-lasting material. Unique new technology at Seapoint Clinic in Blackrock, County Dublin, means that patients can now have these highly aesthetic tooth-coloured fillings or crowns created and placed during one single dental appointment, rather than the normal two or three visits. CEREC is a sophisticated computer aided design system (CAD), which does away with the need to create impressions of the teeth, or make temporary fillings. A 3D camera scan is taken of the prepared tooth, and CEREC restorations are automatically milled out of a ceramic block in a matter of minutes, ready to be placed immediately. Seapoint Clinic has invested €200,000 on this new technology and new laboratory facilities, the first of its kind to be installed in a dental practice in Ireland. Replacing amalgam fillings with the more aesthetic ceramic version is now popular, and the use of crowns to restore damaged teeth is also common, as patients come to appreciate the health and nutrition advantages of restoring teeth, rather than removing them, says Victoria Baird of the Seapoint Clinic. “Implant technology is advancing rapidly, as patients want to keep their own teeth as healthy and as attractive as possible. CEREC is changing the world of dentistry, meaning that the lengthy process of moulding and creating a new tooth or filling, temporarily fixing the defective tooth, and later applying the crown, now takes less than an hour for the whole procedure.” Patients save time, inconvenience, and have much less stressful treatment with the CEREC treatment procedure, Cerec prices in the Seapoint Clinic compare favourably with the cost of regular crowns with discounts available when more than one is done at the same time. The progressive Dublin clinic can produce a number of crowns in just one appointment, as they are produced instantly in the Seapoint laboratory, meaning that people need only to be numbed once, and have only one appointment off work, Victoria Baird says. “CEREC is used extensively in Europe, although mostly for fillings or inlays. With the latest CEREC crown design software, the time-saving benefits and simplicity of this procedure has huge appeal for our patients”, comments Victoria Baird, from the Seapoint practice. In terms of durability, long-term clinical studies show that the metal-free CEREC restorations are at least equivalent to, if not better than, gold restorations. The CEREC system was developed in Zurich University originally, and has been in use since 1985, although advances in the computer design and milling technologies have improved substantially in recent years.
