This leaflet outlines what
you can expect when

Department
Restorative Dentistry
Department
The Restorative Dental Department has
What will happen at your
first assessment visit ?

A member of the dental staff (or sometimes, if you agree, a supervised
dental student) will ask you about the
reason your dentist has referred you;

They will also ask you about your
medical and dental history;

They will then examine your mouth
and teeth;

Usually x-ray pictures are carried out
in the Radiography Department to
provide further information on your
dental condition;
three clinics:

The Periodontal Clinic

The Prosthodontic Clinic

The Conservation Clinic
Most patients are referred by their own
dentist (known as their General Dental
Practitioner or GDP) to one of these
clinics for a specialist dental opinion or
to request specific specialist treatment
for an aspect of their dental care.
Your dentist must follow the published
referral criteria for the Restorative
Dentistry Department.
We do not accept referrals made on
financial grounds.
Please allow
adequate time for
car parking

Based on all of this information
treatment options are then discussed
with you and a plan of dental care is
agreed;

Dental treatments are not carried out
at this first assessment visit.
This visit may take up to
2-3 hours so please allow
sufficient time
What happens next?
In most cases a treatment plan will be
sent back to your own dentist to help
them provide you with the recommended
dental treatments.
Sometimes treatments are provided by
both your own dentist and the
Restorative Dentistry Department,
working together on your dental treatment
plan, this is known as ‘Shared Care’.
If specialist treatment is required you will
be placed on a treatment waiting list in
the School of Dentistry. You will be
advised of the approximate waiting time.
If you consider that the waiting time is too
long you may wish to avail of the services
of a specialist in the private sector. Your
GDP will be able to make this referral for
you.
If you change your contact
details please inform us
immediately
