Know your beauty supplements
naturally in many foods like avocado, asparagus,
broccoli, garlic, spinach, tomatoes, and turmeric.
What it does. The strong antioxidant effect of glutathione
helps keep cells running smoothly. It also helps the liver remove
chemicals that are foreign to the body, such as drugs and
pollutants. Alternative medicine experts say severely ill people
like those with cancer, AIDS, or other serious diseases are often
depleted of glutathione.
What are the risks. Overall, taking glutathione in reasonable
amounts appears to be quite safe, although it should be avoided
in people with milk protein allergies and in those who have
received an organ transplant.

T
he boom in beauty supplements has given rise
to new terms that have become as common as
ascorbic acid or B vitamins. However, we know
little about what they are. Below is a quick guide to
the active ingredients contained in the supplements
we take.
GLUTATHIONE. A molecule produced by the
body and found in every cell. Said to be the body’s
most important antioxidant, glutathione also occurs
L-CARNITINE. A nutrient that helps the body turn
fat into energy, L-carnitine is produced by the body
in the liver and kidneys and stored in the skeletal
muscles, heart and brain. It is found in meat, dairy
products, legumes, and vegetables.
What it does. Since it is an antioxidant, L-carnitine may
be helpful for people with immune-deficiency disorders.
Athletes have also used L-carnitine to bulk up. Some of the
conditions carnitine may help treat are serious like heart diseases,
Alzheimer’s, and kidney diseases.
What are the risks. Because supplements may have side
effects or interact with medications, you should take them only
under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider.
High doses (5 or more grams per day) may cause diarrhea. Other
rare side effects include increased appetite, body odor, and rash.

COLLAGEN. The single most abundant protein in
the animal kingdom. There are at least 16 types of
collagen and the structures they form all serve the
same purpose, to help tissues withstand stretching.
In fact, it makes up about 25 percent of the total
amount of proteins in the body. Soy products,
cheese, and dark green vegetables contain collagenproducing agents.
What it does. Some people refer to collagen as the glue
that holds the body together. Without it, the body would, quite
literally, fall apart.
What are the risks. Most oral collagen supplements are
derived from cow or chicken body parts, so people sensitive to
these foods, or to gelatin, may have negative reactions.

The Fit In You
In the pink of health!
Every activity counts. Being active reduces stress,
boosts energy, and lowers your risk of disease.
Healthy activities include all sorts of things, from
cleaning the house to doing aerobics. Try to be
active a total of at least 30 minutes each day. When
you exercise, choose things you enjoy. Drink plenty
of water while being active.
4
FACT
Are fruit
juices healthy?
Generally, yes,
but not if you
are diabetic.
Juices may
contain extra
carbohydrates
that can raise
blood glucose
above desirable
levels.
Enjoy a rainbow of foods. Think of variety and
color when eating. Fresh, frozen, or vacuum-packed
foods with bright colors are often healthier than
over processed, faded foods. They also may contain
less salt, fat, and additives. Plus, eating a variety of
foods provides a full range of nutrients.
Explore new foods and cooking techniques.
Ô Steam, bake, roast, broil, or grill instead of
frying. Don’t overcook vegetables.
Ô Eat at least 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of
vegetables each day (for a 2,000-calorie diet).
Ô Choose foods containing whole grains, beans,
rice, peas, or pasta.
Ô Make meat a side dish rather than the center of
your meals.
Ô Rather than relying on salt, try pepper, garlic,
onion, lemon, and other herbs and seasonings.
Know when to eat.
Ô Ask yourself if you’re really hungry. Don’t eat
just because you’re lonely, anxious, depressed,
or bored. Call a friend or take a walk instead.
Ô Try eating several small meals or snacks
throughout the day rather than three large
meals. Frequent, small meals give you steady
energy.
Health & Wellness For Her 2011
Take a break from stress.
When you feel stress building up, think of the
following:
Ô Recognize what you can and cannot control.
Ô When you do have some control, think about
changes you can make. Use your personal goals
and values to set priorities. Decide what is most
important each day.

Try the following techniques:
Ô STRETCH. While sitting or standing, raise your

for a few seconds and feel your arms and back
muscles relax. Repeat 5 times.
Ô BREATHE DEEPLY. Find a quiet spot. While
sitting, close your eyes. Breathe in slowly
through your nose. Breathe out slowly through
your mouth. Continue for 5 minutes.
Ô LAUGH. Look for any chance you can to laugh
to relieve stress. Kids are great for showing you
how.

When You Have It
Pain, pain, go away
M
any women feel physical or mood changes
during the days before menstruation. When
these changes affect a woman’s normal life, they are
known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
It is common to experience the following:
Physical symptoms
Thirst and appetite changes (food cravings)
Breast tenderness
6
fact
Premenstrual
symptoms are a
common part of
the menstrual
cycle. At least
85% of women
who menstruate

at least one
premenstrual
symptom.
Bloating and weight gain
Headache
Swelling of the hands or feet
Aches and pains
Fatigue
Skin problems
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Abdominal pain
Emotional symptoms
Depression
Angry outbursts
Irritability
Crying spells
Anxiety
Confusion
Social withdrawal
Poor concentration
Insomnia
Increased nap taking
Changes in sexual desire
The cause of PMS is unclear. However, you can
manage them by:
Aerobic exercise.  It may reduce fatigue and
depression. Aerobic exercise, which includes brisk
walking, running, cycling, and swimming, increases
your heart rate and lung function.
Relaxation. Finding ways to relax and reduce stress
can help women who have PMS. Relaxation therapy
may include breathing exercises, meditation, and
yoga. You can also try massage therapy. Regular
sleeping habits may help lessen moodiness and
fatigue.

may help prevent conflicts with others.
Dietary supplements. Your doctor may suggest
that you take calcium supplements. Studies have
shown that taking 1,200 mg of calcium a day can
help reduce the physical and mood symptoms
that are part of PMS. According to RENI, Filipinos
recommended calcium intake is 750-800 mg.

Simply Delicate
4common women’s diseases
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
A urinary tract infection is caused by germs,
usually bacteria that enter the urethra and then
the bladder. This can lead to infection, most
commonly in the bladder itself, which can spread
to the kidneys. Women tend to get them more
often because their urethra is shorter and closer
to the anus than in men. Because of this, women
are more likely to get an infection after sexual
activity or when using a diaphragm for birth control.
Menopause also increases the risk of a UTI.
8
FACT
BEAUTY BEFORE
HEALTH?
Women would
rather look
beautiful than
be healthy, a
survey by British
healthcare
group showed.
Nineteen percent
of women also
resorted to crash
diets to lose
weight while
nearly 14 percent
admitted to
using diet pills
to lose weight.
SYMPTOMS include increased urine volume and frequency,
increased fluid intake (always thirsty), unexplained weight loss,
slow healing infections of the skin, vulva or urinary tract due to
decreased resistance to infection, blurring of vision.
TREATMENT consists of lifestyle changes including stopping
smoking, exercise, losing weight , and a low-salt low-fat diet. It is
also treated with insulin (for Type 1 diabetes), oral medications
(for Type 2 diabetes).
PREVENTION. Apply the lifestyle modifications listed as
treatments.
SYMPTOMS include cloudy or bloody urine, low fever, pain
while urinating. Fever, chills, nausea, and fatigue may occur
when the infection has spread to your kidneys.
TREATMENT will begin with a urinalysis and other tests, the
results of which will tell your doctor the best treatment for your
infection.
PREVENTION. Change your sanitary pads every time you use
the bathroom. Keep your genital area clean, including before and
after sexual activity. Avoid tight-fitting pants and use cotton-cloth
underwear. Drink plenty of fluids (from 2 to 4 liters each day).
Do NOT drink fluids that irritate the bladder, such as alcohol and
caffeine.
DIABETES
Diabetes is a disease in which your blood
glucose, or sugar levels are too high. Glucose comes
from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that
helps the glucose get into your cells to give them
energy. With Type 1 diabetes, your body does
not make insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, the more
common type, your body does not make or use
insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose
stays in your blood. Diabetes can damage your
eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause
heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a
limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called
gestational diabetes.
Health & Wellness For Her 2011
HEART DISEASE
Heart disease is the leading cause of death of
both men and women. Diseases of the heart and
circulation are so common that sometimes signs and
symptoms are easily missed.
RISK FACTORS include family history, increasing age,
smoking, high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure,
physical inactivity, obesity, and diabetes.
SYMPTOMS include discomfort, weakness, being easily
tired, or, when severe, produces low blood pressure, difficulty
of breathing, pulmonary edema, palpitation, and angina or chest
pain. They are a result, most commonly, from the narrowing of

vessels, disturbance of contraction and/or relaxation of heart
muscles, obstruction to blood flow, or an abnormal cardiac
rhythm or rate.
TREATMENT of heart disease due to hypertension includes
medication that helps improve blood flow. For disease due to the
narrowing of vessels, an angioplasty may be recommended or
even a coronary artery bypass graft may be performed to create
a pathway that will avoid the narrow or clogged ones. Surgery is
also indicated for those with congenital problems. For those with
an underlying medical condition like diabetes or high cholesterol
or an infection, treatment is focused on the cause to prevent the
complication of heart disease.
PREVENTION consists of diet and lifestyle modification,
including increasing physical activity and consuming more fruits,
vegetables, fish, and food free of saturated fats. Increasing or
maintaining physical activity helps decrease the bad cholesterol
in the blood. Preventing heart disease also means maintaining a
healthy weight, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, reducing stress,
and regularly monitoring blood pressure and blood cholesterol
levels among those with a strong family history of heart disease.

being “down in the dumps” or “blue” for a few
days. If you have depression, the feelings do not
go away. They persist and interfere with your
everyday life. It is much more common in women.
Women can also get postpartum depression after
the birth of a baby. Depression is one part of
bipolar disorder.
SYMPTOMS can include sadness, loss of interest or pleasure
in activities you used to enjoy, change in weight, difficulty
sleeping or oversleeping, energy loss, feelings of worthlessness
and guilt, fatigue, the need for isolation, inability to think,
concentrate or make decisions.
TREATMENT includes psychotherapy through supportive
and cognitive therapy, anti-depression medication, social
support, regular exercise, healthy diet, adequate sleep, and stress
reduction.
PREVENTION. Healthy lifestyle habits can help prevent
depression, or lessen the chances of it happening again. Talk
therapy and antidepressant medication can also lower the
likelihood of your becoming depressed again. Talk therapy may
help you through times of grief, stress, or low mood. Family
therapy may be particularly important for teens who feel blue.
Maintaining connections to others is particularly important in
preventing depression.

VAGINAL DRYNESS
This is a common
problem for
women during and
after menopause,
says the Mayo
Clinic. However,

SAFE

you put in the
microwave. Use

rather than

in the microwave.
And always use
microwave-safe
containers.
3. Breastfeed your baby. It may play a role in
breast cancer prevention. The longer you
breastfeed the greater the protective effect,
according to Mayo Clinic.
More than 30% of cancer could be prevented by
modifying or avoiding key risk factors, including:
tobacco use
being overweight or obese
low fruit and vegetable intake
physical inactivity
alcohol use
sexually transmitted HPV-infection
urban air pollution
indoor smoke from household use of solid fuels.
4. Take a 30-minute walk every evening after
dinner. Moderate exercise reduces levels of
estrogen, a hormone that contributes to breast
cancer.
5. Use a condom and stick to one partner. The
more sexual partners a woman has, the greater
her risk of contracting human papillomavirus, or
HPV, which causes cervical cancer.
6. Cut out high-fat animal proteins. A Yale study
says women with diets high in saturated fat
increased cancer risk by as much as 90%.
Here are other simple tips that can significantly
reduce your risk for cancer, according to Reader’s
Digest and the World Health Organization:
1. Eat broccoli, a cancer-preventing superfood that
you should eat frequently, preferably steamed.
2. Pop a calcium supplement with vitamin D
to reduce colon polyps (a risk factor for colon
cancer).
7. Drink green tea. A chemical in green tea called
EGCG could be one of the most powerful
anticancer compounds ever discovered.

Intimate Details
Why protection is necessary
A
new study by Indiana University shows
American female teens use condoms nearly
60% of the time, compared to the 24% usage of
women aged 25 to 34.
According to a Yahoo news story, experts believe
low usage among older women may be because
they are in monogamous relationships and feel
little need for protection. However, many sexually
transmitted diseases, including herpes and HPV, can
have easy-to-miss symptoms and in some cases no
symptoms at all, so older women might be unaware
that they (or their partners) are infected. Condoms
also prevent the spread of chlamydia, gonorrhea,
and HIV.
In fact, today’s condoms don’t stand in the
way of pleasure. They’re made thinner and come
in variants that heighten feelings of intimacy. The
same study also found that adults who use condoms
during sex are just as likely to rate the experience as
positively as when they are unprotected.
“You need to have zero tolerance for anyone
who is unwilling to use a condom,” says urologist
Jennifer Berman, M.D., an expert in female sexual
medicine, who points out that one in five adults has
an STD and that many of these diseases, such as
gonorrhea, are on the rise.

orning sickness is very common, according
to the U.S. Department of Health. It usually
begins during the first month of pregnancy and
continues through the 14th to 16th week (third or
fourth month). Some women have nausea and
vomiting through their entire pregnancy.
The exact cause of morning sickness is
unknown. It may be caused by hormone
changes or lower blood sugar during
early pregnancy. Emotional stress,
fatigue, traveling, or some foods can
make the problem worse.
Here are tips on how you can cope
with morning sickness.
5
Ginger or luya is proven effective against
morning sickness. It also makes you vomit less.
Drink salabat or ginger tea and eat some ginger
candy.
6
Try acupressure or acupressure wrist
bands. You can find these bands in drug,
health food, and travel stores. If you are
thinking about trying acupuncture, talk to
your doctor and look for an acupuncturist
who is trained to work with pregnant
women.

Don’t smoke and avoid
secondhand smoke.

toast when you first wake up,
even before you get out of bed in
the morning.
Avoid taking medications for
morning sickness. If you do,

soothe your stomach.
Avoid large meals; instead,
snack as often as every 1-2
hours during the day and drink
plenty of fluids.
4
Eat foods high in
protein and complex
carbohydrates, such as peanut
butter on apple slices or celery,
nuts, cheese, crackers, milk,
cottage cheese, and yogurt.
Avoid foods high in fat and salt,
but low in nutrition.

Liver and liver products (paté, liver sausage, liver spread) may
contain large amounts of the retinol form of vitamin A, too much of
which could be bad for your developing baby.
Some pregnant women need to avoid nuts. If you, your partner, or
any of your other children (if you have any) have a history of allergies
such as hay fever, asthma, or eczema, don’t eat nuts during pregnancy
and breastfeeding to reduce your baby’s chances of developing a
potentially serious nut allergy.

Toothpaste for burns. Toothpaste can actually
open up wounds. To administer first aid on minor
burns, soak the affected part in cool water or
apply a cold, wet compress. For burns with open
wounds, wrap it in sterile, non-stick dressing.
Garlic for dog bites. While garlic has a number of
natural enzymes that fight infections, it should not
be applied on dog bites. Instead, promptly wash the
bite wound with soap and go immediately to the
hospital. There are no other scientifically-proven
means of preventing rabies infection, which is fatal,
other than an anti-rabies vaccine.
Urine for hyperhydrosis (pasma). Don’t pee on
hands and feet that sweat excessively. It won’t
cure your pasma—and smells bad! Instead, use an
antiperspirant containing aluminum chloride or
consult your doctor.
A water-alcohol sponge bath for fever. The
cooling effect on the skin of rubbing or isopropyl
alcohol as it evaporates is undeniable—but not
for kids. Instead, try plain acetaminophen, for kids
more than 12 months old and a simple lukewarm
bath.

Dry your hair upside down to build volume when
you blow-dry. Work a palm full of mousse from
your roots through to the ends, then flip your head
over and dry your hair away from the scalp.
Milk reduces the redness in your face. Soak a
clean washcloth in cold milk and place it over your
face for 10 minutes. The proteins, fat, amino acids,
and vitamin A in milk reduce redness. Plus the lactic
acid in milk exfoliates, so skin looks soft.
For fuller lips, think pink. Dark or bright colors
call attention to the size of your lips, emphasizing
thinness and fine lines around your mouth. Instead,
choose a lipstick that mimics the color of your lips
when you were younger.

Weight-bearing exercises
Exercises that make your body work against
gravity are good options for promoting healthy
bones. Each time your foot hits the ground, you
apply stress to your bones, which respond by
maintaining or sometimes increasing their strength.
These exercises include: running or jogging,
dancing, stair climbing, tennis or netball, skipping
rope, jumping.

Resistance training is any exercise that causes the
muscles to contract against an external resistance,
according to emedicinehealth.com. The external
resistance can be dumbbells, rubber exercise
tubing, your own body weight, bricks, bottles of
water, or any other object that causes the muscles
to contract.
Exercises include: weight lifting, pull-ups, pushups, bench press, exercise balls and bands.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Talk to your doctor or a qualified fitness professional
to make sure your exercise program is right for you.

Shop Smartly
Store brands offer great value!
M
any consumers don’t realize the value of
purchasing store-brand items versus name-brand
ones. Often, store-brand items are normally much less
expensive than their name-brand equivalent.
In terms of quality,
store-brand items are on
par with branded goods.
Some store-brand items are
actually supplied by bigname manufacturers, only
with another label.
Often, store-brand
items contain the same
ingredients or made the
same way as their more expensive counterparts.
Know that branded items are priced much higher
because the advertising that’s spent on them is passed
on to you, the consumer.
Store brands also give you the option to try new
products you normally would have second thoughts of
buying because they’re not within your budget. Why
should you suffer the pain of wearing heels your job
requires if you can get store-brand heel cushions at a
reasonable price?
And, if you trust the store that’s offering you their
own brand of food or toiletries, chances are, you’ll be
happy getting an equally effective product at a price
that guarantees you substantial savings over time.
For the best value for money, go for Watsons’
own competitively priced, high quality private
labels and brands. Together with the best brands
from top manufacturers, Watsons delivers only
the best health, wellness, and beauty solutions to

Food & Drinks
Snack smartly
O
ne of the biggest myths about snacking is that
it’s a bad thing. In fact, if you eat until you are
comfortable (not “full”) at breakfast or lunch, you’ll
certainly need merienda to boost your energy.
Here’s how to snack smartly.
GOYA DARK CHOCOLATE
WILKINS
Distilled drinking water
known as the standard of
purity and safety.
Choose healthier snacks. Banana or camote cue,
fresh fruit or fruit cups, low-salt nuts and chips and
diet soda are good choices.
20
FACT
Children
consume more
calories in a
given
meal if they
are watching
television
while they
eat, according
to research.
Avoid trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol.
Anything that says “partially hydrogenated vegetable
oil” as among the top three ingredients on the label
is suspect. Some manufacturers have done a good
job of reformulating products to remove trans fats.
Don’t snack if you aren’t really hungry. Just
because it’s merienda time doesn’t mean you
have to eat. Research has shown that when people
who aren’t hungry eat a snack, they don’t eat less
calories at dinner.
MARTY’S CRACKLIN’
ORBIT
WRIGLEY’S DOUBLEMINT
Dark chocolate is good for you. It is rich in
antioxidants and lowers blood pressure.
To hold hunger at bay and provide a constant
supply of energy, snacks should include some
carbohydrate, fiber, protein, and a little fat
(preferably “smart fats” like monounsaturated and
polyunsaturated fats). Look for at least 5 grams of
protein and about 5 grams of fiber.
