7.1 "Translating Phrases"
Objectives:
*
Learn how to translate English phrases into algebraic expressions and vice-versa.
*
Be able to make up a word problem that …ts a given equation.
Preliminaries:
Solving problems using algebraic methods involves translating English phrases into equivalent algebraic expressions. We used
this process when we worked with percent problems.

NOTE: For Subtractions and Division we must write the numbers in the order they are given.
F or Example :
"The di¤erence between x and 7" means x 7 , not 7 x

y

"The quotient of y and 16" means

Example 1:
Translate the following phrases into algebraic expressions:
a) 3 less than a number
b) a number less than three
e) the sum of twice a number and three times the same number
c) 4 times the sum of a number and 8
d) 8 divided by a number plus 3
Example 2:
Write an algebraic expression that correspond to the following descriptions.
a) the number of minutes in h hours
b) the number of years in d days.
