Walk-In • Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. • Take out respiratory diagram from yesterday. • Read over the labels we already did and try to guess the remaining labels. Diagram • Follow along as we complete the diagram of the organs. Today’s Learning Target • Learn the function of each respiratory organ by viewing this presentation on the class webpage. • Take notes in your slide guide. • Heads-up: The quiz on Friday is an opennotes quiz! You may use your diagram, notes you take today, and notes you do on Friday when you do the quiz! Watch Brainpop: Respiratory System & Asthma Lungs • Lungs help the body breathe. • The upper part of the chest is almost filled with lungs. • Lungs can hold about as much air as a basketball! Lungs Working With the Heart • Lungs trade air with blood. The heart pumps used blood to the lungs. The lungs take the carbon dioxide and other things that the body cannot use out of the blood. • The lungs add oxygen to the blood. • After the trading is done, the blood goes back to the heart to be pumped to the body to deliver oxygen to the cells. What makes up the respiratory system? 1. Lungs 4. Bronchi / Bronchial tubes (breathe in) and exhale • The windpipe breaks off into (breathe out) air. two tubes called bronchi. The bronchi branch off like a tree into bronchial tubes Draw bronchi and label this diagram, using your “slide guide” to help you! trachea alveoli bronchioles diaphragm How do Alveoli work???? When you breath in, your lungs expand and take in oxygen. This oxygen goes straight to your alveoli. The capillary that surrounds the alveoli picks up that oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide to be exhaled. How does the Diaphragm work???? When your diaphragm pulls down, it not only leaves more space for the lungs to expand but also lowers the internal air pressure. Outside, where the air pressure is greater, you suck in air in an inhale. The air then expands your lungs like a pair of balloons. When your diaphragm relaxes, the cavity inside your body gets smaller again. Your muscles squeeze your rib cage and your lungs begin to collapse as the air is pushed up and out your body in an exhale. True or False? We inhale because the air pressure inside the chest cavity is less than outside the body. T The lungs are composed of hundreds of tiny air sacs called alveoli. T Oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream in the trachea. F The bronchial tubes branch off from the trachea into an upside down Y. T Watch the movie!
