URANUS
By Nick Towers
The Name
❏ Uranus got its name from the god of the sky.
❏ Uranus means “father of the titans” in Greek Mythology.
Discovery
❏ First planet discovered in modern times.
❏ Discovered by William Herschel on March 13, 1781.
❏ Uranus was spotted many other times, but it was looked at
as a star.
Planet Measurements
Mass: 8.683e25 kg
Volume: 68,330,000,000,000 km
Density: 1.27 g/cm

Gravity: 8.69 m/s

Float or Sink in Water
❏ Uranus would float in water because of its low density.
❏ It is the second least dense planet in the solar system.
Atmosphere

Icy atmosphere
83% hydrogen
15% helium
2% methane

Distance
 Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun.
 2,877,000,000 km from the Sun.
 2,057,000,000 km from Earth.
Orbit and Rotation
 Takes 84 earth years to orbit the sun.
 Takes 17 hours and 14 minutes to rotate on its own axis.
Temperature
 -243 to -370 degrees F
 The temperature on Uranus is much colder than on earth.
Composition/Appearance
 Uranus is a gas giant because its surface lacks a solid.
 The internal composition contains hydrogen, helium, and
methane.
 Uranus is one of the outer planets. Uranus looks very
similar to Neptune. Uranus is a blue/green color. It has
rings orbiting it, but they are hard to see.
Rings
There are rings around Uranus , but they are very
difficult to see. James Elliot, Edward Dunham, and Douglas
Mink discovered it when Uranus passed in front of a star and
was noticed that there were dips in the brightness.
 13 rings, Color: Blue-ish, clear. It is made of Black dust
particles, large rocks, and helium.
Water
 Not sure, but astronomers suspect there could have been
lots of water.
Weather
 It is beyond freezing cold.
 It is the coldest planet in the
Solar System.
Moons
 Uranus does have moons orbit around it.
 There are 27 moons
 If a human went to Uranus they would probably freeze to
death.
Something Special
 Uranus rotates from top to bottom unlike all of the other
planets which rotate side to side.
 Uranus is the coldest planet in the Solar System.
 Uranus has rings.
 It was the first planet discovered in modern times.
 Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun.
