By: Tristan McMullen Pangaea also referred to as the “Super Continent”. It was when all the continents were connected . This continents name was coined in scientific discussion of Alfred Wegner’s theory of continental drift. Now it is believed that plate tectonics caused Pangaea. The theory was not first accepted by other scientist. PangaeaA hypothetical supercontinent that included all the landmasses of the earth before the Triassic Period. Pangaea broke apart during the Triassic and Jurassic Periods . The theory of Pangaea was made by Alfred Wergner in the 19th century. Before Pangaea was brought up the theory of contraction was being discussed. Continental drift is based on Alfred Weregner’s theory. The theory is that the lateral movement of continents resulting from the motion of crustal plates. However Alfred Weregner wasn’t the first to create this theory. The theory was just perfected by him. Wegner was also an accomplished astronomer. He had a phd in astronomy actually. This gave him a vast understanding of other types of science which help him understand geology better to come up with his theories. Roberto Montavani and Willam Henry Pickering both expanded on Wegner’s theory on continental drift. Divergent Boundary- A theory that explains geological phenomena such as volcanism, continental drift, and mountain building in the earth's lithosphers plates. Multiple hazards come out of divergent boundaries such as earthquakes, volcanoes, mudslides, landslides, and mountains in shape and size. An example of this is the San Andreas Fault. Divergent boundary- Plates that are pulling apart that cause trenches, shield volcanoes, and earthquakes. The mid-Atlantic ridge is an example of a divergent boundary. A transform boundary is a fault that runs along a boundary of a tectonic plate. Volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, and avalanches are all hazards that are caused by transform boundaries. An example of a transform boundary that you may be familiar with is the San Andreas Fault. SAN ANDREAS FAULT We live on the North American plate. The Caribbean plate, The Juan De Fuca plate, and the Cocos plate border the United States. We are in danger of earthquakes from the San Andreas fault and other fault lines going across the United States but, its inevitable whether it will durastically affect us. I predict that there is going to be a big landslide however that is in the very distant future. There is only one state in the United States that is not on the North American plate and that is California. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subject s/astronomy/planets/earth/Continents.shtml http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/pla nets/earth/Continents.shtml http://scign.jpl.nasa.gov/learn/plate2.htm http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab= wi http://geology.com/plate-tectonics.shtml
