The Universe, Stars, and Solar System Test
(Chapters 3 and 4)
Friday, October 7th
You need to know:
1. The Big Bang- five basic steps of the big bang, when it happened, what does the
future of our universe look like?
2. Galaxies-four main shapes, what is our galaxy named and what shape is it? Be able
to put space objects in order from biggest to smallest (use the galactic address info)
3. Stars-What is a star? How do they make light and heat? How are stars classified?
What are constellations? Describe the colors of hot stars and cool stars.
4. The Sun-How do prominences and solar flares (CME’s) affect Earth? What protects
Earth from CME’s?
5. What does our Solar System look like and who came up with this model in 1543?
6. Which planets travel around the sun fastest? What are the planets in order?
7. The Solar System- What are the inner and outer planets and their characteristics?
8. Compare and contrast regular planets and dwarf planets. Why isn’t Pluto a planet?
9. Review the unique characteristics of the planets as outlined in our “Solar System
Review/Preview” worksheet
10. Gravitational pull-what determines how strong gravity is? What’s the difference
between weight and mass? Where would your weight be greatest in our solar system?
What two factors influence the amount of gravitational force an object has?
11. Other objects in the solar system-What is the difference between a comet, meteoroid,
meteor, meteorite, and asteroid? Where do they come from?
Review your notes, class PowerPoints, worksheets, and the chapters in the
book to prepare for the test. It will consist of some multiple choice, open
ended questions, and reading charts.
