hardness. Steak is the most reliable method since the color of a mineral’s streak on a streak
plate is not always the same as the color of the mineral sample. Unlike the surface of a
mineral sample, the streak is not affected by weathering. Hardness refers to a mineral’s
resistance to being scratched. Each mineral has a different hardness on the Moh’s hardness
scale.
