E NDANGERED SPECIES PROJECT Use these sites to select your organism: http://www.earthsendangered.com/index.asp or http://www.iucnredlist.org or https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/directory?direction=desc&sort=extinction_status The links above have a current list of endangered species. Each species may only be chosen by one group. ***YOU MUST go to Canvas to access and list your species on the Endangered Species List Google Sheet.*** -Your endangered species: _________________________________________________________ (check on IUCNredlist to verify) Include: _______Your species must be on the endangered or critically endangered list, not threatened or vulnerable. _______Common & scientific name & classification _______Physical Descriptions/Adaptations (What does it look like? Ex: has stripes for camouflage, etc.) _______Numbers – What is the current estimate for number of individuals? Approximately how many were there, when the population number was at its greatest? Have numbers declined quickly? Are numbers still declining despite efforts made? Are numbers increasing? _______Biome (Where does it live? Describe the habitat/ecosystem?) _______Lifespan (How long does it live?) _______Diet (What do they eat?) Include a food web w/ your species. _______Endangered Species Act is summarized, and applied to species. For foreign species, also describe international law or treaty; still summarize ESA. _______Map of distribution (Its range, where it can be found. Show a map of where they live.) _______Minimum of 5 interesting facts (You can add more but minimum of 5!) _______Main reasons/causes for being endangered. _______Environmental Importance: What would happen to the environment or other species if your species were to be allowed to go extinct? _______What are people doing to reverse this problem? Are people doing those things? If so, tell about it. If not, why not? _______Name 1 conservation organization/group dealing w/ animal/wildlife conservation. Explain what they do. What has worked for other species that could work for this species? How does the organization help species? What more do you think they could do? _______Citations (Web address of your sources) Format: Free format. Open to creativity. This is your time to shine! It can be a decorated display board, a book, a brochure, a magazine, or anything fun you can come up with. You will receive credit for effort and creativity. (a plain poster w/ a few printed pictures and text will not earn you a high grade) You can do a separate product for each or include them all into one, however you think would be more appropriate. (Ex: a display board with a 3-D model of your species + a brochure, etc.) Endangered Species Fair: We are going to have an “Endangered Species Fair” where you will visit other stations and record information to learn about other endangered species. Do something unique to make others interested in learning more about your species. Be familiar enough with your species that you could discuss/answer questions from other teachers and students without reading your text.
