ONE OF CANADA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL SCHOOLS OF
PUBLIC POLICY
Director and Palmer Chair, School of Public Policy
The University of Calgary has a bold and ambitious strategic vision, Eyes High, to become one
of Canada’s top five research universities by its 50th anniversary in 2016. This vision continues
to excite and energize the entire University community. With more than 31,000 students in 14
faculties, 85 Research Institutes and Centres plus 6,500 faculty and staff members, the University
of Calgary is guided by determined leadership that is energized and focused on its goals.
We believe that developing sound public policy is a key to unleashing Canada’s social and
economic potential. To do this there must be a strengthening of Canada’s public service and
further bridging of the gaps between business, government and academia. Our School of Public
Policy provides a practical, global and focused perspective on public policy analysis and practice
in three areas: Energy and Environmental, Economic and Social, and International Policy. We
conduct influential research to provide in-depth recommendations to policy makers. We also
build capacity in government by offering students intensive educational experiences in policy
development and analysis through the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program as well as the new
joint MBA/MPP and JD/MPP programs.
You have a graduate degree (ideally a PhD) and/or has the type of credentials, background and
expertise that will allow them to operate with a high level of credibility in an academic setting;
are well connected and have high levels of access and influence on the Country’s decision
makers. Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), you will leverage your
reputation to be the School’s chief advocate, relationship builder and fund raiser and will be
sought out by industry and public sector figures for your thought leadership and guidance.
Through your influence, and through the impact of your students, The School of Public Policy
will be your platform to visibly contribute to the shaping of Canada’s public policy discussion.
