University of Calgary PhD Studentship Opportunity: Isotopic tracer investigations of water and carbon cycles Potential Research Topics: We are currently seeking a motivated student interested in tracing flows of water and carbon through the hydrological cycle. Potential thesis topics include: -Isotopic techniques to assess the age of water in streams and rivers -Tracking atmospheric moisture sources using isotopes -The role of groundwater in CO2 evasion from inland waters -Quantifying groundwater-aquifer carbon exchanges using stable and radioactive isotopes Award Details -This is a fully-funded four-year PhD studentship. -Expected start date is Sept. 1, 2016 although earlier dates can be accommodated. Candidate Profile Applicants should meet the following requirements: -Hold (or be completing) a masters degree in a field related to Geography or Earth/Environmental Science. -Have an entering GPA of at least 3.5 on the 4-point scale (or equivalent). -Be an independent, curious scientist willing to pursue his/her own ideas and interests. -Have strong writing and communication skills. Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: -Hydrological techniques for studying surface and groundwater flows -Collection, analysis, and interpretation of stable water isotope samples -Aquatic biogeochemistry Research Group/Institution Profile The successful candidate will study in Calgary, a city that has been recently ranked the best city in Canada to live, and is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 cities in the world. The candidate will join a newly established joint research laboratory that combines expertise in freshwater and marine science. The student will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge equipment, and participate in collaborative field campaigns ranging from Alberta’s oil sands to the Canadian Arctic.
