A Mr. Ayala Presentation • Things to know/ ponder • 1) What influenced the architecture, artistic, and literacy developments of Renaissance Italy? • 2) How did the classics influence the idea of humanism? • 3) What is a “Renaissance” man? • I) Greece and Rome • A) Considered classical knowledge. Looked to the classics; not middle age art and literature. • B) Wanted to return the learning of Greece and Rome. Did this in three ways. • 1) Artists and scholars drew inspiration from Roman ruins. • 2) Western scholars studied Latin manuscripts preserved in monasteries. • 3) Christian scholars fled Constantinople to Rome after the invasion of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453. • II) Classics led to Humanism • A) Study of classical texts led to an intellectual movement known as Humanism. • 1) Focuses on human potential and achievements • B) Studied classical texts to understand Greek values,. • C) Influenced artists and scholars to carry classical traditions • D) Influenced the teachings of history, literature, and philosophy. These are called the humanities. • III) Worldly Pleasures • A) Humanists suggested that you may enjoy your life without offending God. Opposite of the middle ages. • B) Most stayed Catholic but became secular or secularists; worldly rather than spiritual and concerned with the here and now. • IV) Patrons • A) Church leaders and wealthy families would become patrons or financial backers for artists, writers, and engineers. • 1) This was used to show political power. 2) Example Medici in Florence; Bankers. Used money to beautify the city. • V) Renaissance man vs Renaissance Woman • A) Renaissance man: must be educated and create art. Must excel in many different fields. • B) Renaissance Woman • 1) upper class should be educated and charming. • 2) Inspire art but not create. • 3) little influence in politics.
