Adult Infectious Diseases
Fellowship training in Infectious Diseases has been reviewed and approved by the Postgraduate Medical Education
Committee of Aga Khan University and commenced in January 2010. The programme is designed to develop fully
trained Infectious Diseases physicians who would be able to complete the requirements for FCPS in infectious
diseases.
Training at AKU in this discipline offers a unique experience in adult infectious diseases with exposure to a wide
range of both inpatient and outpatient infections as well as in-house rotations in the clinical microbiology laboratory
and paediatric infectious diseases, experience in infection control and antimicrobial stewardship as well as ample
opportunities for electives outside of the institute.
Objective
The objective of the programme is to produce competent and skilled academic infectious diseases physicians. The
graduates of this programme would have acquired the training and exposure to all the endemic infectious diseases as
well as to infection control and antimicrobial stewardship and consequently function as independent infectious
diseases specialists.
Duration of training
Training period is two years.

Scope and content
Clinical training
The fellow will rotate with the faculty on-service who will train the candidate in the diagnosis, management and
prevention of infections. Rotations through Paediatric infectious diseases and the clinical microbiology laboratory at
Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi and Indus Hospital, SIUT and MALC will be provided. The selected fellow will
be expected to assume and provide leadership to Infectious diseases team at AKUH. The fellow will also be actively
involved in the infection control activities of the hospital as well as antimicrobial stewardship programs.
Research
Ample opportunities exist to conduct clinical and basic sciences research. The fellow will be expected to publish one
paper during his/her training and make a presentation at a national level every year. The fellow will be expected to
participate in continuing medical education programmes of the University.
Evaluation
Continuous assessment and evaluation will be done by all faculty members on a daily basis. The fellow will be
debriefed at the end of a rotation with each faculty member.
Positions available
One fellow will be recruited every year.
Administrative set-up
There are currently three full-time infectious disease specialists, two assistant professors and one senior
instructor. Infectious disease is part of the section of Internal Medicine which is part of the Department of
Medicine. The Programme Director is Dr Syed Faisal Mahmood.
