1. What are the physical changes that take place when an igneous rock turns into a
sedimentary rock? The physical change that takes place when igneous rock turns into a
sedimentary rock is weathering.
2. Which part of the rock cycle helps form igneous rock but not other types of rock? The
part of the rock cycle that helps form igneous rock but not other types of rock is melting.
3. Which part of the rock cycle helps form sedimentary rock but not other types of rock?
The part of the rock cycle that helps form sedimentary rock but not other types of rock
is erosion.
4. What would be needed for a metamorphic rock to be turned into a sedimentary rock?
To turn a metamorphic rock into a sedimentary rock, there must be erosion and
deposition.
5. Acid rain can dissolve the minerals in rock faster than normal rainwater. How does acid
rain affect different types of rock? It dissolves some rocks faster because of their
different compositions. Different minerals dissolve faster than others.
6. Mountain ranges can be produced when tectonic plates collide and push areas of
Earth’s crust to higher elevations. What is the name of this process? The name of this
process is uplift.
7. Repeated cycles of heating and cooling can cause a rock to crack breaking it into smaller
pieces. What is the name of this process? The name of this process is weathering.
8. How does sedimentary rock form? Sedimentary rock is formed from sediment being
deposited in layers which will eventually harden into rock due to the pressure of the
layers on top.
9. How does igneous rock form? Igneous rock forms from magma (if below the surface) or
lave (if above the surface) cooling slowly.
10. What does the term subsidence mean in relation to the rock cycle? The term
subsidence refers to the sinking of the Earth’s crust.
11. What does the term uplift mean in relation to the rock cycle? Uplift is when regions of
the Earth’s crust rise up to higher elevations.
12. When a volcano erupts, ash is ejected into the atmosphere. What term describes what
happens when the ash reaches the surface of the Earth? The term that describes this is
deposition.
13. What change of state takes place when magma turns into igneous rock? When magma
turns into igneous rock it goes from a liquid state to a solid state.
14. What would be needed for a sedimentary rock to be changed into a metamorphic rock?
For a sedimentary rock to turn into a metamorphic rock, it must be subjected to high
temperatures, high pressure, a combination of high temperature and pressure, or
chemical processes.
15. What causes a rift zone and how would magma flow if it found its way into a rift zone?
A rift zone is created when two plates pull apart from each other and if magma were to
make its way into the rift zone, it would flow to the surface.
16. What would most likely cause pebbles in a stream to erode? Flowing water would most
likely cause pebbles in a stream to erode.
17. Over time, repeated temperature changes can cause a rock to break into smaller pieces.
What is the name of this process? The name of this process is weathering.
18. What is the definition of the rock cycle? A series of geologic processes in which rock can
form, change from one type to another, be destroyed, and form again is called the rock
cycle.
19. Explain a way that a sedimentary rock could form, break into smaller pieces over time,
and become sedimentary rock again in another location. A sedimentary rock could form
from layers of sediment that are cemented together by the pressure of the layers on
top. This rock could then be subjected to weathering and erosion. The sediment is
carried downstream and is deposited into layers in another location. Over time the
layers of sediment would form into a new sedimentary rock due to the pressure of the
top layers.
20. What conditions must be present for igneous rock to change into metamorphic rock
and name two ways that this could happen? The conditions that must be present are
igneous rock must undergo chemical changes due to heat or heat and pressure to turn
into a metamorphic rock. This could occur by contact metamorphism, where a magma
body heats the rock around it and changes this rock. This layer experiences heat and
pressure of varying degrees throughout the process, slowly changing it into a
metamorphic rock.
