Chapter 7-Types of Rocks Vocabulary 1. mineral 2. rock 3. igneous rock 4. sedimentary rock 5. metamorphic rock Rocks can be made of many minerals There are more than 4000 minerals and many of them look alike. Scientists use physical properties to identify mineral. Some physical properties are hardness, luster(reflecting light), and streak(powder left behind). Igneous rock- forms when magma cools into lava. Magma is melted rock deep inside the Earth. Lava is magma that has reach the surface of the Earth. Basalt(ocean) and granite(continent) are examples of igneous rock Sedimentary Rock- sediment ( pieces of rock that have been broken and moved) piles in layers. These layers get pressed together, stick together and form a rock. You may find fossils in this type of rock. Shale and sandstone are examples of sedimentary rock. Metamorphic rock- rock that has been changed into another type of rock. Heat and pressure usually cause this to happen. This happens a lot when mountains are forming. Limestone becomes marble, shale forms slate. So marble and slate are metamorphic because they used to be a different type of rock.
