Modular Arm Abduction Orthosis
1.2.
RANGE OF APPLICATION
Modular Arm Abduction Orthosis is designed for relief and immobilization of the shoulder arm-area especially in the treatment of post-traumatic and postoperative conditions. The orthosis enables the positioning
of the upper extremity - the adjustment of the angle of shoulder abduction, the adjustment of the horizontal
flexion in shoulder and elbow joints. The Modular Arm Abduction Orthosis is provided as an assembly for
individual treatment. The orthosis is prescribed by a medical doctor, fabrication and fitting are performed by
the orthotist. Advantages of the orthosis are adjustability at any time and improved wearing comfort
(minimal weight, hygienic qualities, mobility of a patient). The orthosis does not ensure the same fixation
compared to plaster cast.

The orthosis consists of length-adjustable trunk
(4), upper arm (3) and forearm (1), (2) bars.
Pelvic (6) and thoracic (5) band are attached to
the trunk bar. Upper arm (8) and forearm (7) rests
are attached to the arm bars. Modules are
assembled using the set of screws and bolts (10).
The orthosis is fixed on the patient using the set
of straps (9).

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
MEASUREMENTS
The ING modular arm abduction orthosis is
assembled and adjusted according to the
following measurements:
A forearm length (olecranon - mp joint)
B upper arm length (axilla - olecranon)
C length axilla - trochanter
α angle of abduction of shoulder
β angle of horizontal flexion of elbow

MEASURING PROCEDURE
The affected arm of the patient should be kept in
prescribed therapeutic position during measuring
and application of the orthosis.
Measure the length of the forearm (olecranon to
mp joint) - measurement A.
Measure the length of the upper arm (axilla to
olecranon) - measurement B.
Measure the trunk length (axilla to trochanter) measurement C.

Modular Arm Abduction Othosis
Measure the angle of abduction - angle α.
Measure the angle of elbow rotation - angle β.
3. FITTING OF THE ORTHOSIS
Fit the thoracic band to patient. The upper edge
should be approximately 2-3 cm bellow the axilla.
Fit the pelvic band to patient. The lower edge
should be approximately 5 cm above the
trochanter.
Prevent the pressure effect to the anterior
superior iliac spine (A.S.I.S.)!

Modular Arm Abduction Othosis
The length between the outer edges of the trunk
bands is equal the measurement C minus 7 cm
(measured on the inner surface).
Tighten the bolts reliably.
Release the bolts of the upper arm bar.
The orthosis is ready for the length adjustment of
the upper arm bar.
The length of the upper arm bar is equal the
measurement B minus 7 cm (measured between
the shoulder joint and elbow one).
Tighten the bolts reliably.
The bolts fix the upper arm rest on the upper arm
bar. The position of the upper arm rest can be
modified.
Place the upper arm rest in the distance of 1/3
length of the upper arm bar (measured from the
elbow joint).

Release the bolts of the forearm bar.
The orthosis is ready for the length adjustment of
the forearm bar.
The length of the forearm bar is equal the
measurement A (measured between the elbow
joint and the edge of the hand rest ).
Tighten the bolts reliably.
The bolts fix the forearm rest on the forearm bar.
The position of the forearm rest can be modified.
Place the forearm rest in the distance of 1/2
length of the forearm bar.
Adjust the horizontal flexion of the shoulder joint.
Tighten the screws reliably.

4. APPLICATION AND FINAL
FITTING OF THE ORTHOSIS
4.1.
FITTING
Place the orthosis under the arm of the patient and
hold the orthesis in the desired position.
Place the thoracic strap within the roll guides of
the thoracic band and fix it by means of both
hook and pile closure.
Place the pelvic strap within the roll guides of the
pelvic band and fix it by means of both hook and
pile closure.
Place the diagonal strap within the roll guides of
the pelvic band over the opposite shoulder and fix
it by means of both hook and pile closure.

Fasten the shoulder strap.
This strap is optional.
Fasten the strap of the upper arm rest.
Fasten the strap of the forearm rest.
The orthosis now provides the stability of the
shoulder joint and it is ready for fine adjustments.

4.2.
FINE ADJUSTMENTS
The final adjustments can be maintained after the
preliminary fitting of the orthosis.
The following adjustments can be provided:
• adjustment of the forearm length
• adjustment of the upper arm length
• adjustment of the trunk bar length
• adjustment of the angle of abduction
The adjustment sleeve on the threaded rod
provides angle adjustment:
Left rotation = increased angle of abduction
Right rotation = decreased angle of abduction

Modular Arm Abduction Othosis
• adjustment of the horizontal flexion of the
shoulder joint
• adjustment of the horizontal flexion of the
elbow joint
Rotate the forarm rest if the small angle of
abduction is adjusted
Rotated forarm rest enables the patient better fit
and support of the forearm
Tighten the bolts reliably.
