ARM WRESTLING LAB
BALANCED, UNBALANCED FORCES, AND NET FORCE
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to apply forces and determine how they affect motion. Using your
knowledge of balanced, unbalanced and net forces, you will apply these to a game we all are familiar
with.
Question: How many different opponents do I need to arm wrestle to provide enough force to
overcome the force of resistance from three different opponents? (YOU MUST ARM WRESTLE AT LEAST
2 GIRLS AND 2 BOYS)
Hypothesis:
Procedure:
1)
2)
3)
Results:
Opponent

Trial 1
Trial 2
Trial 3

Conclusion:
1) Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect?
2) What sources of error could have affected your results?
3) What future question does this leave you with? Could you do anything to improve your results?
QUESTIONS:
1) What is a force and what SI unit is it measured in?
2) Does force have a direction?
3) Compare and contrast balanced vs. unbalanced forces? Which produces motion?
4) What is net force and what direction does it take? How is it calculated?

5) Explain in terms of forces all the forces applied to the game of arm wrestling. (LIST ALL FORCES
YOU CAN THINK OF!)
6) Explain the relationship between mass and velocity has on force. Are they direct or inverse
relationships?
