WATER Water is a transparent and nearly colourless chemical substance that is the main constituent of Earth's streams, lakes, and oceans, and the fluids of most living organisms. Its chemical formula is H2O, meaning that its molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, that are connected by covalent bonds. Water strictly refers to the liquid state of that substance, that prevails at standard ambient temperature and pressure; but it often refers also to its solid state (ice) or its gaseous state (steam or water vapour). It also occurs in nature as snow, glaciers, ice packs and icebergs, clouds, fog, dew, aquifers, and atmospheric humidity. Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 96.5% of the planet's crust water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a small fraction in other large water bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapour, clouds (formed of ice and liquid water suspended in air), and precipitation. Only 2.5% of this water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice (excepting ice in clouds) and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere, and an even smaller amount of the Earth's freshwater (0.003%) is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products. A greater quantity of water is found in the earth's interior. STATES FIGHTING FOR WATER Cauvery water row explained: Why Tamil Nadu, Karnataka fight over river usage? VS TAMIL NADU Water is the elixir of life, a precious gift of nature to mankind and millions of other species living on the earth. The total water resources available in India is 1859 km3, which is roughly 4% of the world’s fresh water resources. The total water resources available in India is 1850km3, which is roughly 4% of the world’s fresh water resources. It is fast becoming a scare commodity in most part of the world. Tamil Nadu accounts for 4 per cent of the land area and 6 per cent of the population, but only 3 per cent of the water resources of the country. Most of Tamil Nadu is located in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats and hence receives limited rainfall from the South-west monsoon. KARNATAKA Karnataka is located in the Deccan Peninsular region of India and covers an area of 191,791 square km. Water resources of Karnataka primarily constitutes surface and groundwater. Rainfall is the basic source of water in the state. Surface water is available in Karnataka in the form of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, reservoirs, etc. Karnataka has surface water potential of around 102 km. Being the seventh largest state in India (area-wise), Karnataka possesses about six percent of the country’s total surface water resources of about 17 lakh million cubic metres (Mcum). Karnataka is blessed with seven river basins. There are 36,753 tanks in the state and they have a capacity of about 684518 hectares PROBLEM A Supreme Court order asking Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water every day for next 10 days to neighbouring Tamil Nadu has sparked off an agitation by farmers in Karnataka. Cauvery Horata Samiti activists and farmers blocked roads in the Shrirangapattana taluk of Mandya on Tuesday to protest the SC directive. A bandh was called by the pro-Kannada outfit on Monday. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah called an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery river water issue and the apex court’s order on the matter. Karnataka claims that the British-era agreement was not correct as it did not get its due share of water. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu believes that it needs the water to sustain extensive farming that has increased because of Karnataka’s commitment to providing sufficient water. Karnataka wants to triple its water share from the river, that originates from Kodagu and flows through Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala, which means there Tamil Nadu’s portion will reduce. The total length of the river is 3,180 km (1,980 mi) which makes it one of longest rivers in Asia. The Krishna River is the fourth-biggest river in terms of water inflows and river basin area in India, after the Ganga , Godavani and Brahmaputra. The river is almost 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) long. The river is also called Krishnaveni . BRAHMAPUTRA KOSHI RIVER The Brahmaputra ̪] is a trans-boundary river in Asia.
