Phosphagen system

Short burst – up to 30 seconds

Anerobic

Uses energy stored in muscle cells
Glycogen or lactate system

Up to 5 minutes of activity

Takes over when the phosphagen system is depleted from


Krebs cycle

Aerobic – requires oxygen

Produces the largest amount of ATP

Can be sustained – as long as adequate oxygen is supplied

Fueled by pyruvic acid derived from glycolosis or fatty acids from
adipose (fat) tissue or absorbed from diet.
Smooth muscle

Smooth (involuntary)

Called visceral muscle

Found primarily in the digestive system and uterus

Capable of long periods of activity without fatigue

Intestinal muscle moves in waves

Peristalsis
Cardiac muscle

Found only in the heart

Movement is inherent and rhythmic

Requires no nerve stimulus

Only split seconds of rest between contraction
Skeletal muscle (striated)

Usually attached to bone by tendons and ligaments

Under direct control of the will

Usually arranged in sets – one bends the joint, one straightens the
joint


Flexor - bends

Extensor – straightens
Striated muscle is a series of long cells arranged side by side

When it receives signal – contracts

Do not act oppositional to each other, act successively
