A medical center with a main hospital in Taipei and three branches in Tamsui, Hsinchu, and Taitung, it has 1200 beds. Annually 45,000 surgical pathology specimens are reviewed, of which 3,500 are skin biopsies. The Department of Dermatology, officially established in 1962, was initially dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy. As it has developed over the years, our department has is now known for its academic achievements, subspecialties, and solid training programs. Subspecialties in our department include dermatopathology, contact dermatitis and patch testing, medical mycology, hair and nail disorders, pediatric dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology. We are equipped with a 6-headed teaching microscope, photopatch and phototherapy, mycology lab, operating rooms for skin surgery, a digital microscope for skin and hair analysis, VISIA for skin analysis, and treatment-based and cosmetic lasers, including He-Ne, dye, Er-YAG, ruby, and Nd-YAG lasers, ultrapulse CO2 laser with fractional mode, diode laser with radiofrequency, and intensive pulse light. There are two well-trained dermatopathologists in our department. Dr. Hsiu-Chin Chen had her dermatopathology training in Mayo Clinic with Dr. Daniel Su and Dr. Ackerman’ s laboratory in New York. Dr. Yu-Hung Wu, the current chairman of the department and director of this program, was trained at Indiana University Hospital by Dr. Antoinette Hood. Dr. Wu has given a monthly dermatopathology lecture to all Taiwanese dermatologists and pathologists since 2003. We welcome dermatologists or pathologists who are interested in further training in dermatopathology to apply to our program. Your own experience will also be of value to us. Program description There are, three-month, six-month, and one-year, in The International Dermatopathology Fellowship Program at Mackay Memorial Hospital has three options: 3-month, 6-month, and 1-year programs. Two positions are available at any one time. The program provides a comprehensive dermatopathology experience. Training includes daily slide reading, clinico-pathological and academic conferences, and access to a well-organized dermatopathology slide library. A total of 36 dermatopathology topics (appendix 1) are covered. Every topic has a 1.5-hour lecture and 10-15 teaching slides. From a collection of more than 600 test slides, an additional 15 unknowns are reviewed as a self-test every month. Fellows are also welcome to use our complete 8-year collection of clinical pictures, glass slides, and presentation files in the clinico-pathological conferences. Curriculum Fellows will read slides daily with the program director, prepare conferences, and review teaching materials in the department collection. They will develop further understanding of the skin pathology and interpretation methods, including histopathology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and diagnostic molecular pathology. Core curriculum for each program 3-month training The fellow studies 36 topics in 3 months, (12 topics per month or 3 topics per week). The major categories are inflammatory disorders; infection and tumors of the epidermis; and appendageal tumors, soft tissue tumors, and lymphoma. 6-month training The fellow covers the same topics as listed above but with each major topic spread over 2 months. In addition, the fellow reviews 15 unknown slides every 2 weeks. 1-year training In addition to covering the topics listed above and unknown self-test slides, the fellow will also study clinico-pathological conference cases In addition to the comprehensive review of dermatopathology, the fellow has adequate time for elective work in other areas, such as the mycology laboratory or the patch test clinic. They may be English or Mandarin speaking. Tasks and Responsibilities: The fellow will participate in both mandatory and elective department activities. Mandatory activities include: - Sign out dermatopathology slides every Tuesday to Saturday morning (3 hours) - Attend dermatopathology glass slide teaching tests, every two weeks (1 hour) - Attend the monthly dermatopathology lecture (1.5 hour) - Attend the clinico-pathological conference, every Thursday afternoon (2 hours) Elective activities include: - Observe and learn with attending physicians at outpatient clinics (in Mandarin). - Observe procedures performed in the treatment room. - Attend the weekly journal club, every Thursday morning. - Attend weekly ward rounds every Friday morning. - Observe and learn with attending physicians at special clinics (blue font in the table). - Attend the monthly mycology lecture (in Mandarin). - Participate in the culture and identification of fungi in the mycology laboratory. Costs: Tuition is 10,000 NT dollars per month. The Taiwanese Dermatological Association provides scholarships of NT 60,000 per year for two 3-month candidates recommended by the Asian Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The tuition fee is waived for the first two fellows in the first year. The living expenses in Taipei are around 12,000 to 15,000 NT dollars (including accommodation) per month. Accommodations: There are limited dormitories for international scholars in Tamsui Mackay Memorial Hospital branch. The dormitory fee for one month is about 2,400 NT. Required documents: 1.
