Overview:
Mackay Memorial Hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in Taiwan, just celebrating its
130-year birthday in 2010. A medical center with a main hospital in Taipei and three branches
in Tamsui, Hsinchu, and Taitung, it has 1200 beds. Annually 45,000 surgical pathology
specimens are reviewed, of which 3,500 are skin biopsies. The Department of Dermatology,
officially established in 1962, was initially dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy.
As it has developed over the years, our department has is now known for its academic
achievements, subspecialties, and solid training programs.
Subspecialties in our department include dermatopathology, contact dermatitis and patch
testing, medical mycology, hair and nail disorders, pediatric dermatology, and cosmetic
dermatology. We are equipped with a 6-headed teaching microscope, photopatch and
phototherapy, mycology lab, operating rooms for skin surgery, a digital microscope for skin and
hair analysis, VISIA for skin analysis, and treatment-based and cosmetic lasers, including
He-Ne, dye, Er-YAG, ruby, and Nd-YAG lasers, ultrapulse CO2 laser with fractional mode,
diode laser with radiofrequency, and intensive pulse light.
There are two well-trained dermatopathologists in our department. Dr. Hsiu-Chin Chen
had her dermatopathology training in Mayo Clinic with Dr. Daniel Su and Dr. Ackerman’
s
laboratory in New York. Dr. Yu-Hung Wu, the current chairman of the department and director
of this program, was trained at Indiana University Hospital by Dr. Antoinette Hood. Dr. Wu has
given a monthly dermatopathology lecture to all Taiwanese dermatologists and pathologists
since 2003.
We welcome dermatologists or pathologists who are interested in further training in
dermatopathology to apply to our program. Your own experience will also be of value to us.
