FS2012 Data-logger
The FS2012 Data-logger has been especially commissioned and will be required to be fitted to all electric
and alternative fuelled vehicles participating in the Formula Student 2012 event.
The data logger contains the following logging capability
Time
Distance
Vehicle Speed
Lateral G
Longitudinal G
GPS location
HV battery voltage
HV current
HV battery consumption
Voltage measurement
channels
Wheel speed
From the Data-logger
Internal channel from the Data-logger’s built in GPS
Internal channel from the Data-logger’s built in GPS or wheel speed sensor
Internal channel from the Data-logger’s built in G Sensor
Internal channel from the Data-logger’s built in G Sensor
Internal channel from the Data-logger’s built in GPS
From the external HV sensor
From the internal current sensor
Calculated in the Data-logger
4 0 – 5V signal 10 bit with selectable pull up resistors (2 used for HV system
voltage and current measurement)
4 0 – 5V signal 10 bit with selectable pull ups and Thermocouple option. (2
used for HV sensor temperature measurement)
4 0 – 5V differential signal with common external -ve 10 bit with 100K pull
down resistors - to be used for active channels (throttle potentiometer)
4 Wheel speed inputs, using a hall effect speed sensor type Cherry
GS100502 (optional for FS teams in 2012)
Formula Student will require all internal channels and the HV channels to be logged at all times that the
vehicle is running. The following additional channels must be used by the teams (each to be logged with a
0-5V channel and the signal must not be below 0.2V or above 4.8V otherwise it will be defined as failed):
- Throttle pedal position 1
- Engine throttle position 1 (if using an internal combustion engine)
- Brake pressure
Please note that teams are expected to provide potentiometers for the throttle positions and a pressure
sensor for brake pressure.
THE FS2012 DATA-LOGGER
 The specification includes a high-voltage sensor and high-current sensor to monitor the energy
usage and any replenishment of the vehicle battery pack.
 The participating vehicle will be expected to be fitted with a standard automotive specification 12V
supply for the Data-logger otherwise, apart from high-voltage supply measurement, no other direct
connection to the vehicle systems are required.
 The Data-Logger is 140x80x50mm in dimension with a LCD screen on its top face. It has 6
connectors on the front face.
 The unit will log all inputs after initial start until the unit is removed from the vehicle.
 The LCD Display will give status information.
 There are two LEDS a Green LED indicates the unit is logging.
 The RED led will be continuous lit with the power on and will flash if the Data-logger has detected a
fault either with itself or one of the sensors.
CURRENT SENSOR
 The current sensor is based on the LEM HTFS400 -P/SP2.
 A non-contact Hall-effect sensor capable of measuring +/- 600 Amps.
 To be fitted around an insulated cable from the battery pack.
 It should be secured on the cable appropriately.
 It is supplied with a 2m cable which plugs directly into the Data-logger via a dedicated plug (CN2).
 As it has no direct electrical connection to the vehicle system it should not interfere with vehicle
operation.
HIGH VOLTAGE SENSOR
 The high voltage sensor is a Hall-effect current balance sensor with 2.5Kv Isolation between the
high voltage side and the output to the Data-logger. The high voltage side has an impedance of 95K and
should have a current draw of < 10mAmps.
 The Sensor is housed in a case measuring 60x55x30mm. It has two wires for connection to the High
voltage battery pack and it should be connected so that the battery can be monitored any time the
vehicle ready for use.
 The unit should be mounted away from heat sources and in environment with an ambient temp
< 80 deg C.

The sensor has a 2m cable with a 4-way connector for direct contact with the Data-logger.
GPS SENSOR
 The GPS sensor is small combined aerial and receiver unit, measuring 50mm dia x 20mm.
 Should be mounted on a horizontal surface, facing upwards, with a metal base underneath. It has a
magnetic base for easy mounting with a cable of 1.25m in length.
KILL SWITCH WIRING
 The kill switch wiring does not need to be used in 2012
Wheel Speed sensor
FURTHER INFORMATION
 An installation pack will be provided. Each team will need to purchase the wiring loom in advance
and will cost approximately £50 per team (payment details to be sent directly to Class 1A teams). Once
the IMechE FS team have received your payment, the unit and installation pack will be posted out to
the team. Apart from the wiring loom, all other parts must be returned by the end of the event along
with the Data-loggers.
 The Data-logger unit will be checked at Scrutineering onsite.
 After the Endurance Event, the Data-logger will be removed by the organisers for the downloading
of relevant information.
Please Note:
 The FS2012 Data-logger remains the property of the event organisers.
 Data collected remains with the FS2012 Organisers but a copy of each relevant data will be
provided, post-event, to the entrant.
 The FS2012 Data-logger is produced by GEMS Limited. For any technical enquiries please contact
