Way Back Wednesday: Berlin Wall is built
Perspectives
● German Democratic Republic (GDR)
supported the Berlin Wall
● Citizens of Berlin and the US opposed it
Decisions
● The decisions made were bad
● The Berlin Wall caused an increase in
tension between the US and Soviet Union
● 171 people were killed by attempting to
escape East Berlin
Items that played into the Berlin Wall
● East Germany did not like the way that West
Germany handled their government
○ East Germany: Communistic
○ West Germany: Democratic
● The difference in government made it
virtually impossible for them to agree on
political aspects, thus the creation of the
Berlin wall
Benefits for other groups
● West Germans: They got East Germans who
fled East Germany that were skilled workers
Benefits Continued
● The Allies (United States, Soviet Union,
France, and Great Britain): Berlin was split
up into four sections each controlled by one
of the Allies
Effect on World Peace
● The Berlin Wall hurt World Peace slightly
because America had fortified their rights to
stay in Berlin however the Russian leader
Khrushchev said that he would sign a treaty
with East Germany and evict any and all of
the allied powers, this shows that Soviets
turned their back on the Allies
Effect on World Peace Continued
● After a meeting between President John F
Kennedy and Khrushchev which was
supposed to help the situation in Germany,
actually it hurt it because Khrushchev signed
a peace treaty with East Germany this
ended the West’s access into Berlin
