2.1 Day I: Set Concepts By the end of class you will be able to use set vocabulary to answer questions about sets. Activator FIVE WORDS….THREE WORDS Vocabulary • Set: A Collection of objects, known as elements or members. • Examples of Sets: – N = {1, 2, 3, ….} • Roster Notation – A: Students wearing jeans in this room • Descriptive Notation – B = {x I xЄN and 3<x<10} • Set Builder Notation Changing Forms • Write A in roster notation if A is the set of US states that begin with the letter W • Write B = {L, N, E, P, A} in descriptive notation • List 3 elements in set C if C = {x I x≠N} What Are Finite Sets? Finite Examples: • A is the set of trees that grow in New Jersey • B is the set of airlines that fly into Philadelphia International Airport • C is the set of 3rd graders at Lenape Non-Finite Examples • R is the set of real numbers • Z is the set of integers • T is the set of time students spend sleeping in a very very very boring class (this is a stretch!) Finite Sets either contain no elements, or contain a number of elements that is a natural number. Other sets are known as infinite. What are Well Defined Sets? Well Defined Examples • A is the set of boys in this class Not Well Defined • C is the set of “cool” students in this class • B is the set of classrooms in E-Wing • D is the set of large numbers • W is the set of whole numbers • E is the set of good teachers at Lenape Well Defined Sets contain elements that can clearly be determined (any two reasonable people would agree on the elements in the set) You Create the Set • A well defined, infinite set in descriptive notation • A well defined set of students in this room that contains exactly 3 elements • A well defined set of students in this room that contains no elements Quia Practice: Teammates Consult 1) One person in your group will login to Quia 2) Take the 2.1 Set Vocab Quiz…the key word is 2.1 3) For each question…. 1) Each person in the group writes the answer to the question on their marker board and hides it from group mates 2) Share your answers once all group mates have answered (discuss any different answers) 3) Answer the question on Quia
