WHAT IS EYEGAZE COMMUNICATION?
•
The Eyegaze System is a communication system for people with complex physical disabilities.
•
The system is run with your eyes by looking at control keys that are displayed on a screen.
•
When the person looks at the control keys displayed, they can synthesize speech, control his/her environment,
operate a telephone, run computer software, operate a computer mouse, and access the Internet and e-mail.
WHO USES THE
EYEGAZE
COMMUNICATION?
The system was developed for those who do not have the capability to
use their hands or their voice. It does not have an age limit. It is used
by adults and children who have spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy,
brain injuries, ALS, multiple sclerosis and brain strokes.
Most people with special needs usually have more control over their
eye movements compared to other muscles.
HOW DOES EYEGAZE COMMUNICATION
WORK?
The user will be in front of the monitor, and a specialized video camera (which sits below the
monitor) and observes the users eyes.
The user will look into the rectangular keys that are displayed on the screen.
To “press” a key, the user looks at the key they want for a period of time.

WHERE EYEGAZE SYSTEMS WORK BEST
• The system must be in an
environment where there is limited
infrared light. Will work best away
from window.
• The room should be lit with
fluorescent or mercury-vapor lights.
