UNIT 9: ROCKS
►ROCKS: WHAT ARE ROCKS LIKE?
Rocks form the solid part of the Earth. Some examples of rocks are
marble, granite and clay. The piece of granite in the photograph is made up
of grains of different colours. These grains are minerals, and these minerals
form granite.
All rocks are made up of minerals, but there are many different types:
 Some rocks are formed by just one mineral. For example, marble is made
up entirely of calcite.
 Many rocks are made up of a mixture of minerals. For example, granite is
made up of feldspar, mica and quartz.
 Some rocks, such as limestone, sometimes have shells and sea creatures
in them.
 Some rocks, such as marble, are hard. Others, such as clay, are soft.
Others, like petroleum, are liquid.
 Rocks can be different colours. For example, coal is black. Marble can be
several different colours.

►WHERE ARE ROCKS EXTRACTED FROM?
Many rocks, for example, granite and
limestone, are extracted from quarries
near the surface of the ground. Others,
for example, coal are extracted from
mines deep underground.

►USES OF ROCKS?
We use rocks for many different things:
 In construction. Granite is used to make walls. Clay is used to make
bricks. Slate is used to make roof tiles.
 Obtaining energy. Petroleum is a liquid rock. It provides fuels, such as
petrol and diesel, to run cars.
 In industry. Factories make plastics and paints from petroleum.
 For decoration. Marble is used to make statues and ornaments.
