Tenovus Innovation Grants – Relevant Research for Real People
Tenovus are committed to funding research that directly helps people affected by cancer in our communities
across all of Wales. This allows us to link our research programme to our extensive cancer support services,
and lets us meet the gap in funding research in this area. There are many issues faced by cancer patients and
their families, from prevention to diagnosis and treatment, to support and survivorship, right through to end
of life care, and this funding programme will help meet some of those needs.
In 2010 we implemented a new funding programme called the Tenovus Innovation Grants. Building on the
success of that programme and from listening to the community, Tenovus has adapted this programme to
bring it much closer to those it is designed to help.

The new grant programme now has a Research Advisory
Group entirely made up of people affected by cancer.
Working with the professional team at Tenovus these
people are ensuring that schemes that are submitted
really will have an impact and meet the real needs of
people living with cancer and its effects on a daily basis.
We are also actively listening to the views of our
communities: through our shops, we carried out a
survey. This identified the priorities you, the
communities in Wales, feel are important.
The Research Advisory Group will be involved at every
stage of our research planning and in all decisions made about funding applications. They will assist us in
developing new ways in which people can request funding; help us set the assessment criteria; and help
us determine which projects eventually do get funded. Most importantly they will also be looking to
involve the public in new and different ways that will mean we reach more of the people more often.

A diagnosis of cancer can have a devastating effect on patients and their families, bringing with it a number
of physical, emotional and practical problems that need to be addressed at an already difficult time.
With a cancer incidence that is amongst the highest in the world1, an ever expanding aging population2 that
predicts a growing number of cancer patients and a health system that is under huge financial pressure,
Wales needs to develop new and innovative ways to help support the ever growing number of people
throughout their cancer journey.

We are looking for innovative projects (they do not have to be new ideas, they could be ways of improving
current or even old services that need fresh ideas and actions) that aim to highlight or meet the needs of
cancer patients and their families in Wales. They must be able to demonstrate a beneficial effect on people
affected by cancer, or have the potential to do so in the future. Most importantly they must have realistic
objectives and have a good chance of continuing after the Tenovus grant funding is finished.
Applications which are able to prove that public and patient involvement are at the heart of the proposal,
and which demonstrate collaborative or partnership working will be given priority.
Our survey, held in our shops, highlighted the following issues:



Healthy Living and cancer prevention
Support (self, carer or family) issues
Late diagnosis and treatment issues
We would particularly welcome research projects that help address these issues, but applications are not
restricted to these areas. If you have a good idea, then please let us know about it.
Please note that we are not accepting applications for laboratory based projects in this scheme.
The Tenovus Innovation Grants are open to all, including individuals, patient groups, Academic Institutions,
Health Professionals and Voluntary Organisations based in Wales. We welcome applications for projects of
all sizes from £1000 up to a maximum of £30,000 but they must complete within 12 months of receiving
funding.
We have allocated a maximum of £120,000 for this grant scheme. Funding will be available in 3 bands:
Small grants from £1000 to £10,000, Medium Grants £10,001 to £19,999 and Large grants £20,000 to a max
of £30,000.
We are aiming to allocate around £40,000 to each band; therefore we anticipate there will be a minimum of
4 small grants, 2 medium and 1 large funded in this round.
In recent years Tenovus has supported a number of research projects that have had a major impact on
patient care and support at these levels of funding. For example, a recent pilot study that received £7000 of
Tenovus research funding has since been developed into a £1million support programme for people affected
by cancer across the whole of Wales. For more details on research projects supported by Tenovus please

Please send an Expression of Interest using the Tenovus Innovation Grant Expression of Interest form (max 2
sides A4) to [email protected] by 4pm on June 26th 2012.

You must use the Tenovus Innovation Grant Expression of Interest (EoI) form.
The EoI must be written in lay language and clearly readable font throughout.
The completed form must be no more than two pages.
Over long EoI, or those which do not address all of the section questions may be rejected.
Full applications will be invited after the EoI has been reviewed by the Tenovus Research Advisory
Group and Tenovus staff.
6) We will inform applicants by August 1st 2012 if they will be invited to submit a full application, which
must be received by Sept 18th2012.
7) Full applications will be subject to external peer review; final funding decisions will be made by
Tenovus’ Research and Patient Services Committee.
