Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre's 2015 - 2016 Mainstage Season production dates
and descriptions:
The Toxic Avenger
Music & lyrics by David Bryan (founding member of Bon Jovi)
Book & lyrics by Joe DiPietro, (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change)
Based on Lloyd Kaufman's film The Toxic Avenger
October 14 - November 8, 2015
Based on the classic cult film of the same name, this rock-pop musical is a charming,
exhilarating and hysterical love story that has it all – an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a
corrupt New Jersey Mayor, and two guys who play EVERY other character in the play;
including bullies, monsters, old ladies and stiletto-wearing back up singers. “Toxie” is an
unconventional contemporary love story with an environmental twist that will rock the house and
leave audiences laughing out loud.
The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge
By Mark Brown
December 2 - 27, 2015
It’s now one year since his miraculous transformation, and good old Scrooge is back to his old
ways, or so it seems. Ebenezer is now suing Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present,
and Future for breaking and entering, kidnapping, slander, pain and suffering, attempted murder,
and intentional infliction of emotional stress. It’s the “Trial of the Century” with hysterical
courtroom antics. With this all-new, very smart and clever script, worthy of the Dickens
original, playwright Mark Brown has created an entertaining, funny and uplifting new tradition
for the holiday season.
West Side Story
Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Arthur Laurents
January 27 - February 21, 2016
West Side Story returns to Actors’ Playhouse almost 20 years since it won the region's Carbonell
Award for “Best Production of a Musical," this time in an all-new and exciting 21st Century
Production. West Side Story is considered by many to be one of the greatest creations in
American musical theatre history. The Jets and the Sharks are back, along with the incomparable
Bernstein score, Romeo and Juliet style romance, and the infamous Jerome Robbins’ based
choreography. West Side Story will explode onto the Miracle Theatre’s Stage as our featured
large-scale musical of the season, with classic reverence and contemporary heat.
Sondheim on Sondheim
Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Conceived by James Lapine
March 16 - April 3, 2016
The first ever South Florida production of the complete catalogue of the master’s career since it’s
Broadway premiere, this amazing new piece of musical theatre is Stephen Sondheim’s final say
on his unparalleled body of work. Sondheim on Sondheim is a stunning yet intimate portrait of
the famed songwriter in his own words, featuring new arrangements of over two dozen
Sondheim songs, ranging from the beloved to the obscure, interspersed with mass media,
including filmed commentary by the composer himself, as he reveals fascinating details about his
life and art. Sung by a cast of the most gifted vocalists to grace our stage and a small chamber
orchestra, this brand new production will be a fitting tribute to one of the finest, if not THE
finest, composers to ever write for the Broadway stage.
The Tin Woman
By Sean Grennan
May 18- June 12, 2016
From the author of Making God Laugh, which our audiences fell in love with two seasons ago,
comes Sean Grennan’s newest comedy, this one with inspirational dramatic resonance. The Tin
Woman is a rich, funny and moving theatrical experience involving a postoperative heart
transplant recipient struggling with her own survival guilt, who decides to meet the family of the
late donor, their son. The grief of the late donor’s family coupled with the recipient’s own
questions, fears and doubts evolve into a very real, very funny and touching new play, that leaves
the audience with an unexpected and moving resolution.
Buyer & Cellar
By Jonathan Tolins
July 13 - August 7, 2016
Winner of the 2013 Drama Desk Award, this fantastically funny one-man tour-de-force was the
most talked about new comedy of last year’s Off-Broadway Season. Buyer & Cellar is an
outrageous show about the oddest of odd jobs: an underemployed Los Angeles actor who goes to
work in Barbra Streisand’s Malibu basement. What follows is a riotously funny new play that
gets every comedic element right, ultimately questioning the price of fame. One actor will
amaze audiences playing a handful of roles including himself, his boyfriend Barry, Streisand’s
House Manager, James Brolin and ultimately Barbra herself.
