Theatre Review Assignment
Beginning and Advanced Drama
Ms. Noah
You are required to write a review of two plays, one per semester.
You may see any production from a High School (NOT Bella Vista, sorry!), Community
College, Sac State or other University, Community Theatre, or Professional Theatre
Reviews are due December 17, 2014 and May 14, 2015.
Your review must include the following:
1. Paper must be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font, two-page
minimum for Beginning, three-page minimum for Advanced. MLA Format!
2. Short synopsis of the play. You can give away the ending if necessary. I’d like to know
the basic plot of the story. What is the basic situation? What is the initial incident and
major conflict in the play? What is the climax of the play, or how is the major problem
resolved?
3. Review/reflection on the actors/characters. Who were your favorite actors in the play?
Why did you like their performances? Were there actors whose performances you did
not like? Why or why not?
4. Review/reflection on the production. Write about the various aspects of production:
describe the sets, costumes, lights, and special effects (if any) used in this production.
Were they effective? Were there problems with any of the technical parts of the
production?
5. Critical review of the play itself. Did you like the script? Were the characters
believable? Did the plot of the play make sense and was the conclusion satisfactory?
Would this be a play you would like to be in or direct?
6. You must include a copy of the program and your ticket stub of the performance that you
attended.
7. Your paper must be free from grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors.
TOTAL POINTS: 100
*Advanced students are expected to go into much more detail in terms of the review of actors,
production, and critical review.
