Layered and sheeted dike complexes of the ophiolite sequence: Genesis,
composition and structural evolution (Khabarny Massif, south Urals)

Khabarny Massif composes an allochthon slice in the package of the tectonic nappes of the
Paleozoic sedimentary volcanic rocks of the Sakmara allochthon (forming a zone of the
same name) of the South Urals mountain belt. The rocks of the ophiolite sequence occupy
the higher structural position of the Khabarny Massif. The dunite-harzburgite complex
represents the restite portion of the ophiolite sequence. The crustal rock complexes are
composed of lower-crust plutonic rocks (layered rock complex) and hypabyssal rocks (upper
gabbro, sheeted dike complex, and volcanic rock complex).
Within the limits of a western part of the Khabarny Massif ophiolite sequence the layered
rock complex is represented by horizon of the mutually intersected layered wehrlite-dunite
and gabbronorite-plagioclase websterite, intruded into the dunite-hartzburgite complex. At
the limits of an eastern part of the massif the peridotite, pyroxenite, gabbronorite and other
rocks of the layered rock complex form unified layered sequence. This difference in the
structure of the layered rock complex in the same ophiolite sequence may indicate the
lateral heterogeneity of the crustal "layer" of the Khabarny ophiolites.
The zone of the upper magma source, which fed the sheeted dikes, is represented at the
limits of a western part of the Khabarny Massif by a thick stockwork of gabbro-dioriteplagiogranite bodies (upper gabbro). Up to the top of the sheeted dike sequence,
serpentinite screens can be found along with gabbroid ones, thus proving the discrete
distribution of the layered rock bodies in the mantle tectonites. The sheeted dike complex is
characterized by presence of acid magmatism, expressed in size-varying plagiogranite veins
and the granitoid matrix of the igneous rock breccias. Most of the granite bodies were
intruded after the emplacement of the early-generation gabbro-diabase dikes. The
spreading process was characterized by the manifestation of several synchronous extension
axes, differing in the direction of the vector of the spreading blocks motion.
The rocks of the crustal segments of the ophiolite sequence of the Khabarny Massif might
have been formed under the conditions of a supra-subduction marginal sea basin. The
evolution of the spreading process in time was accompanied by the relative velocity decline
and by the active effect of the shear component. Along with the areas covered by lava
flows, mantle tectonites, the fragments of the layered rock and dike complexes were
exposed in the basin floor. The products of their erosion produced sedimentary ophioliteclastic rocks. Where hydrothermal fields had been restricted to the ultrabasic rocks at the
basin floor, ophicalcites, including ore-bearing ones, were formed. The upper age limit of
this process is assumed to be the Famennian time (366±2 Ma) [Gannoun et al., 2003]. The
siliceous rock cover of this basin continued to accumulate to the end of the Devonian.
