The Force of Gravity’s Effect on the Motion of Objects in Space
A. Nebular Model Theory for Formation of the Solar System
- Nebular Model – a model that describes the sun and solar system forming together out
of a cloud of dust and gas
 The dust and gas began in a flat disk shape that began to spin due to gravity at
the center of the desk
 The sun (a star) forms at the center of disk as dust and gas condenses and
collapses
 This model explains:
a. Planet location in a relative single plane out from the sun, and the
spacing of the planets out from the sun
b. Planet rotation around the sun all in the same direction
B. The Effects of the Force of Gravity and its Role in the Universe
1. Earth’s gravity keeps people, and objects on the Earth
2. Earth’s gravity keeps our atmosphere (gaseous matter) surrounding the Earth from
floating away into space
3. Earth’s gravity keeps the moon (Earth’s only natural satellite) orbiting the Earth at a
relatively constant pattern
4. The sun’s gravity keeps the nine planets orbiting the sun in regular paths
5. Space bodies (ice, meteors, comets, asteroids, etc.) have their movements influenced
by the gravity of the nearest planet, star, moon, etc. that they encounter. Some are kept
in regular orbits (asteroid belt, planet rings, and comets)
6. The solar system is held in a regular position within the galaxy by gravity from all the
other solar systems in the galaxy.
7. The galaxy is held in a regular position with in the cluster due to gravity from all the
other galaxies within the cluster.
8. The clusters are held in regular position to each other due to the gravity from all the
other clusters and superclusters
**Forces due to gravity hold objects in regular patterns and influence the movement of
objects in non-regular patterns even across very large distances in space.**
